>> reporter: joe manchin was thought to be virtual shoe-in.tic governor in this state. he faces a problem not in his republican rival, mostly in president barack obama and democrats agenda in washington. while manchin is popular here for his work as governor of west virgina, the national agenda for democrats got him into trouble. the republican is trying to put the obama agenda around his neck. he argues that joe manchin is no moderate to conservative democrat. when i gets to washington he will been like them. >> if walks like a duck and squawks like a duck, and nine times out of 10 it is a duck. this governor supports the obama care. a governor that support stimulus. a governor that brought obama's cap-and-trade to west virgina. >> really quite remarkable because when you talk to joe manchin about his positions how he feels about the obama agenda he is very critical. he argues that he has been a staunch opponent of cap-and-trade legislation, the climate change bill in congress. that he now thinks much of health care reform should be repealed

bill: i'm looking at the comment from joe manchin, a popular governor out of west virginia, he wants to be a democratic senator, just yesterday, he came out and said tax cuts should be held in place. he joins people like joe lieberman, ben nelson of nebraska, bill nelson of florida, jim webb of virginia, all these are moderate democrats. how do you buck that trend when these people are drib ling out by the day? >> you're exactly right, bill. if the conservative -- the conservative democrats are worried, they understand that what's been driving this conversation for the longest time has been that the white house has not been paying sufficient attention to the economy, that the unemployment numbers remain high, and that most americans are pessimistic about what the future holds, and this is everything from the tax hike to the decifit. but for the moment, what we saw last week was the president going on the offensive and saying where are the ideas, where is the help coming from with republicans and the white house has forced congressman boehner to say he would agree to tax cuts even if

i find disturbing is that never in the reporting or in the resulting headlines from the poll view manchin as part of the headline out of the -- do you mentioned as part of the headline out of the 1000 people survey, 42% feel this way or 455% feel that way. it is always the impression is given that the majority of the americans were cold and these are the results. -- were polled and these are the results. host: you are concerned about the size of the sample. guest: 1000 is actually a pretty big number of this point. most people do 100 in a statewide poll. but actually, you can get a pretty accurate portrait of the opinions of the electorate. the whole basis of public opinion polling is gambling. . -- sample in theory. it is the idea that -- sampling theory. the idea that you can get a small portion of a population and fairly recon -- represent the overall population has been proven over and over again. even with the problems you have nowadays with cell phones and low response rates. the polls have been done pretty well, by and large. on average, they have done pretty well. host: do you eve
