manchin is trying to hang on there.epublicans are going to pick a candidate to oppose him on tuesday. that's the one with don blankenship. the former coal mining executive who went to jail because of safety violations there. that's on tuesday. also indiana. republican primary there. who is go to challenge joe donnelly again? this was basically a 20-point trump state in 2016. those same voters. donnelly has got to convince a lot of them to re-elect him in 2018. so that is a tall order for donnelly and for manchin. but what is the one thing that democrats like this might have going for them in 2018? this is kind of weird, but the answer is donald trump because the pattern, history tells us this. senators like donnelly and manchin, who are in hostile states in midterms, voted for a president of the other party, there's something about the nature of midterm elections, those voters are a lot more willing in this climate to re-elect them. check this out. go back a generation. go back to '94. senators in the same position, man

harry reid and joe manchin are the only ones who won. this as more reflective of the forces that donald trump has set loose in the republican party and the difficulty that anybody is going to have containing these kinds of arguments in the months and years ahead. >> let's turn to rudy giuliani and multiple reports that the president is frustrated at his sweep through the sunday talk shows, all of the news bombshells that he's been dropping. he's frustrated, yes, but he's been frustrated with john kelly time and time again. john kelly's still there. he's been more than frustrated with jeff sessions. jeff sessions is still the attorney general. so where does this leave rudy? >> that's precisely the right context with these reports. it's a ferris wheel of approval and frustration. one day you're up and very, very down. we'll see if the rudy giuliani thing is different than john kelly, whether the frustration reaches a fever pitch with the president, but we knew before he brought rudy giuliani on board, he was having difficult finding people

it could be good news for joe manchin. going to be good news for the republican party. >> you say this should be an easy win. west virginia is complicated. a republican hasn't won a senate seat since 1959. donald trump did win by 40 points in the presidential election. this is a complicated state with politics. >> absolutely. you know, joe manchin has been trying to and always has been a very centrist nominee and centrist voter in the senate. you know, republicans really could stand to win here. as you said, all four of the states that are voting today were won by trump in 2016. this should be easy and really good chance for republicans to win here. there are other candidates that could be a lot stronger against manchin in 2018. all politics is local. when you have a 40--point-win from the last presidential election, you should have some momentum. this could be a place where republicans could stop the democratic momentum we have seen in the special elections. i don't think blankenship is their guy. >> manchin voting for po

and now they say i want senator manchin to win.e. i want to win. >> neil: you must know you have better odds of taking away votes away from the republican candidate than the democratic incumbent, right? >> not 100% sure of that. the democrats are fed up with senator manchin and a lot of democrats in the mining fields where i'm very well-known and very well-reported. >> neil: if don blankenship has his way, he will run as a third-party candidate. a number of very savvy lawyers including judge andrew napolitano said that wouldn't hold up in court and blankenship could be a threat to the republican attorney general. that would mean you would be dividing the republican vote. hard to say by how much, if it's consequential at all and potentially handling that seat to the embattled senator that is holding that right now, joe manchin. a potential pickup for republicans doesn't materialize. a guy that watches this closely on behalf of his party, a big wig leader there, john thune. senator, good to have you. >> good afternoon, neil. >> neil:

the incumbent, of course, is joe manchin. he's a democrat.publicans would very much like to knock him off, especially given the fact that control of the united states senate could hang in the balance. there are six candidates on the primary ballot. but the only one people are really talking about much here in the state right now is don blankenship, that former coal executive, as well as an ex-convict. he was convicted and served a year for violating the regulations relating to coal mining. he, of course, is controversial in other ways as well. blankenship has used some very colorful, some say racist language in his campaign. very much a campaign of grievance, if you will, so much so that some top establishment republicans have, in fact, asked the president of the united states and he has complied, agreed and went on twitter opposing the campaign of blankenship not on the merits, very interestingly because -- but because he says blankenship cannot win against joe manchin, which frankly is something we don't know the truth about right now. blan
