schumer and manchin were the lead on this. but schumer stayed in close touch with the white house as it went. and they were so very pleased that they were on the precipice of getting this done. and obviously we're still looking at senator sinema of arizona who seems to pride herself in being an enigma and has not yet committed to support this legislation. but if it does go through, not only does it give democrats something tangible to run on going into this november, but it changes the fortunes for this president as well who was just about a year ago when the afghanistan withdrawal went poorly, and the delta variant showed up, that at that point president biden had a really strong first six or seven months in office and things went off the rails and the white house has struggled to find its footing since. but this would be a significant win, along with the bipartisan infrastructure deal along with that first covid relief package, and suddenly aides are saying the entirety of the presidency so far needs -- would be transformed.

i interviewed manchin for about 20 minutes the other day.nes he and schumer went back at it a third time. they've been trying on this for at least ten months. so they went back at it a third time and were able to get together on a deal that raised some corporate taxes, puts some money with the irs, obamacare, medicare prescription drugs, and a bunch of energy and client revisions. it's a $740 billion bill, and it's a big deal. it's not where democrats were last year. they were $3.5 trillion. but this is a big deal that they were even able to get this. >> how much of this when it comes to manchin was about preserving his legacy, john? >> you know, manchin talks about -- look, he's clearly aware of everything's been written about him since december. he's gotten crushed from progressives over this issue, over build back better, over the filibuster, voting rights, he even said to me i've been taking a hell of a beating for the last eight months. you know, he knows about it. but he also -- look, manchin is concerned about inflation. you have to g

what i find really remarkable is manchin given us hints to do something on climate and given joe manchinnd the state he represents is interesting. inflation has been to his credit a consistent concern for the senators since last summer and even though other democrats said maybe we peaked we saw this week a 9.1% inflation rate and that is fueling manchin's concerns and saying let's put the pause on. i think democrats think he is done. >> what is he looking for on inflation? the number going down significantly? to disappear altogether before he gets to a yes? >> he seems to have a concern about raising taxes on the wealthy in the face of rising costs and concerns are hard to pin down. >> it is changing it seems to be. >> what i will say is that the two remains items winnowed are important for democrats. it is not the huge dream list, laundry list that democrats went in with. it's not a big, bold, ambitious agenda but avoiding a spike in obamacare care can't hurt and negotiating drug prices to cig million that you care about things that americans stress about are fine things to campaign on.
