supervisor mandelman [indiscernible] used by the traffic company. these interest the planned operations target specific issues that we get information from either through our own examination through community members or city patners and these enforcement operations focus the mission as well as time spent on enforcement efforts as it relates to them. traffic company itself did 256 directed operations from january to september and 59 percent of those were focus said oen the 5 efforts. the traffic division also oversees grant monies from california office of traffic safety and works with district stations to provide them with funding for traffic related overtime to conduct directed operations in districts. these are operations targeted at safety issues. in addition to directed operations, i believe we need to enhance our data collection and data analysis. we need a better graph on statistics related to educational enforcement and regularly look how many traffic stops we do that result in advisement and warnings and at to the convirsation. better unders

the public safety committee taking up the issue thursday, led by supervisor rafael mandelman, the supervisor sending a letter of inquiry to the police department after it reported a 97% drop in traffic citations in eight years. >> i would like for us to get closer to a plan to actually have more traffic enforcement. >> the police department pointing to its staffing shortage as a key part of the problem because we have less people overall in the department . >> those resources at the traffic company are being pulled in different directions. >> police also pointing to policy, upping the amount of paperwork that comes along with a citation. also warning the citation count doesn't tell the whole story. there is this pool of stops that are happening that aren't resulting in citations, but they are, in fact, traffic stops and an effort for educational enforcement to change people's behavior, make the streets safer. >> the supervisor making a push for a plan, i think in the first quarter of next year, we should definitely have our feet underneath us and be able to have assessed the situation enough

mandelman says last year was the deadliest year on san francisco streets in more than a decade, with 37 traffic related deaths. he says that san francisco police pointed primarily to severe staffing shortages to explain a sharp drop in traffic enforcement given a staffing shortage that even the most optimistic scenario under the most optimistic scenarios will take years to resolve. how can this board help ensure that traffic enforcement gets its fair share of scarce resources? supervisor mandelman says that traffic citations are down from 350 a day in 2014 to just ten a day last year. that hearing is scheduled for september 28th at the public safety and neighborhood services committee. also in san francisco, repair work continues on that giant sinkhole that opened up on fillmore street in the marina district late sunday night. a 16 inch water main failed around midnight, causing major flooding that undermined the street. officials say both the 16 inch main and another eight inch water line have now been repaired. public works employees are still on the scene now repairing the roadway
