mandy, thank you. an estimated 100,000 refugees have fled the violence in libya. many are stranded along its border with tunisia, the country where this wave of uprisings began. the president was ousted last month, but as allen pizzey reports from tunis, that hasn't stopped the protests. >> reporter: listening to this crowd, you'd never know that the revolution which began here two months ago, sent a dictator into exile and spread across the middle east. "down, down with the dictator" they chant. as far as the protestors in casbah square are concerned, the old regime still hasn't got the message. >> reporter: and the potential for violence is on a knife edge. without warning, a shot rang out soldiers pushed into the crowd and grabbed a man. some said he had a knife, others a gun. protestors claim supporters of the regime use a $60,000 slush fund to pay thugs to foment violence. in this case, it was a nervous trigger finger away. it didn't go that well over the weekend. at least five people were killed in violent clashes from the capital's central business district

( gunshots ) these men are getting a crash course on armed rebellion. and they know they could soon be facing a professional army well financed with oil money and bands of african mercenaries flown in for this fight. it's clear many of the men haven't handled a weapon before. and why did you want to volunteer? >> reporter: this is a fight that cuts across generations, young people have been at the forefront so far, but in this part of libya it now seems the whole society is refusing to be intimidated by qaddafi. what about all his weapons and african fighters, aren't y

today, as mandy clark reports, oil production became a target. >> reporter: it was a spectacular attack on a target both sides have avoided so far-- libya's oil infrastructure. these columns of black smoke are rising from the oil terminal at sidr, which was right on today's front lines. the rebels say qaddafi's warplanes hit the facility as their anti-aircraft, guns tried to down the bombers. libyan government blamed anti- qaddafi forces in sticking to their usual rhetoric, al qaeda. further down the road, the rebels launched an attack to retake the town of bin jawad, and by the end of the day, claimed they had clawed back the territory they lost in recent days. but it was a costly victory. a steady stream of wounded reached the hospital. fadhil saleh abu bakr was injured monday in the fighting for bin jawad. "i was hit by shrapnel from a mortar round. they are targeting ambulances and civilians. it's not a war. they're destroying everything," he told us. most of the people who come to this hospital at least know where their loved ones are, but there are many more families who simply do

mandy clark begins our coverage from rebel-held territory. >> reporter: qaddafi's warplanes made a bold strike at benghazi, the biggest city in the rebel- held east. two weapons depots were hit. further west today, the rebels were rushing to consolidate their recent gains. today's target: the town of ras lanuf, with its crucial oil shipping terminal. at times, the untrained militia were showing the strain of its ongoing battle with government forces. trucks were tearing down the road to the front as ambulances raced back and forth to bring the wounded out. this doctor was injured as he worked with a medical team. he told us that helicopters were bringing in mercenaries to fight the government. there were chaotic scenes here just a few moments ago. we heard a plane buzz by overhead, and all the rebel forces who were bunched up on the road spread out into the desert. and now there is heavy shelling happening just down the road. for a while, the assault was taking place in a fierce sandstorm that the rebels hoped would hide their front line out in the desert from qaddafi's warplanes. do yo

"qaddafi you coward, meet us in the battlefield" these men are shouting as they stand in a bomb-blast crater. the rebels are hoping for a no- fly zone, but in the meantime this man and his friends want to knock qaddafi's warplanes out of the sky with surface-to-air missiles. mandy clark reports tonight from the ever-shifting front line. >> reporter: an attack by qaddafi forces took rebels by surprise at bin jawad. they fought hard with everything they had but were forced back. and even while fleeing came under fire. they had originally retreated to the town because of a new threat rebels here say it wasn't just government forces but also residents firing from their homes that forced them to pull back. they confiscated these weapons handed out by qaddafi forces from locals who were loyal to the regime. how many weapons did you find in total? >> reporter: another problem the anti-qaddafi forces are facing: something they call war tourists. >> reporter: but the main worry for the rebel leaders is weaponry. they say they're outgunned and are asking coalition forces to arm them with more missiles and mortars. >> ( translated ): they've got heavier weapons, heavier than the weapons that we have. >> reporter: allied air strikes have removed most of qaddafi's big guns. it's now up to the rebels to win the ground battle, but it's proving the real test for this civil

mandy clark is in the rebel stronghold of benghazi. we begin in tripoli. >> reporter: the u.s.nd its allies have attacked libya with missiles and bombs. moammar qaddafi's response has been defiant and threats. now both sides are evaluating where they stand after a night and a morning of destruction. when the weapons coming at you are cruise missiles fired from hundreds of miles out at sea, and when the only real defense you have is antiquated anti-aircraft artillery shooting at an enemy it can't see let alone hit, you resort to the only weapons you have: for the qaddafi regime, that is people and words. call them human shields, call them enthusiastic supporters come to be with their leader. the effect is the same. the people assembled or were assembled at potential target sites including the fortified qaddafi family compound in tripoli. their presence would make targeting qaddafi himself politically extremely difficult. there is no indication that was the intention. the libyans admitted military targets were hit but claimed about 50 civilians were killed as well. they showed wo

cbs news correspondent mandy clark is outside ajdabiya this morning. mandy, hello. >> reporter: good morning. well, gadhafi's war planes struck again this morning. the town of ras lanuf which sits on the front lines and so far, no word of kaurnlts. casualties yesterday we got a firsthand look. when we arrived at the scene of this bombing, people ignored the danger and raced to show us the damage. just minutes ago, we were driving down the road to get to the front line. when a government war plane dropped two bombs behind us. the shrapnel from those bombs are still warm. a family of three children in this pickup truck when gadhafi's air force truck. two of the children died. the rebels have had trouble on the ground as well. their advance slowed by better armed government forces counterattacking to defend gadhafi's home turf in the west. these fighters are realizing that enthusiasm alone won't get them to tripoli. for days, they advance to town after town in eastern libya by jumping into pickup trucks and racing to the fight with no planning whatsoever.
