mandy has the latest developments for us right now. >> you are right. market sentiment here, general risk aversion, very early in the trading day today when the police outside of the siege cafe in central sydney did storm in to try to end the situation and very sadly ended in tragedy and fatalities. we were hoping far peaceful resolution. it was not to be. three people died and four others injured. if we break them down, bill and kelly, there was a 50-year-old gunman gunman. he was an iranian refugee from 1996. but had very extreme views. and tragically, the other two that were killed were another man, age 34 and a woman 38 and pronounced dead after being taken to the hospital so it is believed that the gunman shot one of the hostages and that gunshot heard was what precipitated the storming of the cafe by the police and paramilitaries and various groups on very, very high alert and as i say it's come to a very tragic end and australia is completely in shock. even though we were raised to a high terror alert back in september with warnings of possibilit

mandy mentioned it $2.76 for a gallon of regular. national average down 50 cents from a year ago. i want to highlight that 42 states are under $3 at this point. that is just an average. you look at certain states like florida they are down 68 sents from last year. virginia down 61 cents. there is going to be a trickle effect from the gas prices into the economy and the stock market. oil producers and the services rksz they may experience problems but you will have a lot of other sectors benefitting from this. i know you guys have been talking about them. the airlines are one. the autos are another. the shippers are also, as well. retailers, food companies that have to transport things to different stores. anybody who uses oil as a raw material, anybody who is shipping a good somewhere or needs consumers to hit the road in order to see their bottom line impacted, they going to see it from this. that is what traders are talking about here. they are not just looking at the oil market right now. they are looking to the s&p and saying we

>> no, mandy. i don't.here's basic things that congress and the administration have been able to get done at this point. i don't see something as micro as sort of getting birthrates higher to change anything but what i'll say is again if the labor market continues to do what i think it will, 241,000 per month and that rate holding every other assumption, that's 4.6%, 4.7% next year and has to be positive for household formations and getting the economy growing again because what's happens in some economies, europe, for example, what starts as cyclical is then structural and if the u.s. economy can enter a much stronger self sustaining phase of output as i believe it will, you'll look for birthrates over time to grow higher and this concern that we've -- in this new secular down trend will reverse. i think people are pessimistic and reflects the fact that the recovery on average is pretty week to this point. >> joe, we have to leave it there. thank you so very much for joining us. >> quickly, joe is crazy wi

cnbc's mandy drury join us with a christmas rally. >> it could, at least for today. it looks like the dow is going to open higher at the moment it the futures suggesting a gain of about 50 poibs at the open. but this would be building on the s&p's best weekly performance in almost two months. we saw a gain of 3.4%. and the news gets even better. because gas prices keep on falling. the average price has dropped another 25 cents a gallon in the past two weeks. so now you're looking at 2.39 a gal be on average. the lowest in over five years. we've got some extra news out of saudi arabia. saying you know what if they're going to get the demand from their customers, they could even increase their output which would mean more pressure downwards on oil prices on gas prices as well. there's been a lot of bottom feeding going on in the energy stocks. the s&p energy index. all those energy related names. nearly 10% last week. a lot of people out there might be thinking we haven't got further to downside to go. i'm going to start getting in there looking for some bargains. >> m

cnbc's mandy drury. >> we've had sketchen straight weeks of gains.best stretch since 1988. today, we could be a little bit on the back foot at least at the open. where of course you mentioned the milestone are foot dow. that is 18,000. if we can get there it would have only taken about five months to reach that since first closing above 17,000 in july of this year. another thing we're watching is mcdonald's shares which also are likely to be a bit lower today because their global sales fell in november. so they're struggling a little bit. they're looking at all kinds of things. such as they're expanding their custom sandwich options. supposedly the most significant menu change since they rolled out breakfast over how years ago. also, more signs of global weakness. places like china, japan, europe. they're not doing so well on the economic front. that's one reason why oil prices, they just keep on dropping. we're at five-year lows. i found the silver lining for you. do you know what it is? >> what is it? >> pump prices. lower pump prices. now 60 cents
