>> mandy thank you very much. the cnbc update shows an economy bouncing back modestly from the contraction in the first quarter and by the way a first-quarter contraction, not as negatively as earlier reported. 0.3 on the first quarter, originally reported at minus 0.7. we'll get a full revision tomorrow at 8:30. second quarter tracking 2.9, a modest rebound, not as strong as hoped. you know tracking that 1.5% for the first quarter, a little below that with a range for the second quarter of 2% to 2%. let's look at who is where. goldman sachs at 2.9, atlanta fed at 2% and what we see is the tale of two different parts of the economy. home sales are doing well up 2.2%, another strong housing report that we had here whereas durable goods, minus 1% on orders. ex-transportation up 0.5 and business up 0.4% so that shows that manufacturing has not yet come back from the winter weakness whereas housing seems to be. here's some commentary that we got. capital economics, they are seeing the glass really half full. they are

thanks, mandy. there is better economic data string of better economic data we've had over the past two weeks increasing the outlook for gdp in the second quarter, our rapid update compiled by moody's which is a survey of ten economists and their tracking survey, up two ticks with those better retail sales and inventories report. we're back over 3% now. suggesting that this recovery from the contraction in the first quarter is more robust. the tracking 1.9% to 4% is the range here. hfe is the top of our range. goldman sachs at 3.1%. right around average. morgan stanley, pretty close. atlanta fed which did such a good job in the first quarter, they came in expecting a very weak second quarter. now they've almost doubled where they were up to 1.9%. a lot of this gain with the consumer doing better. the may retail sales report up 1.2%. that core number that feeds into gdp, up 0.7%. combine that with better jobless claims and the second quarter rebound is looking better. we also got a report on first qu

diana olick with incredible numbers. >> reporter: hi mandy. we know what tech has done for silicon valley real estate, and that has some tech workers moving to other large cities. redfin which first reported the sharp rise in silicon valley deserters, look what tech is doing to other markets outside of silicon valley. they used google apple, facebook and amazon as a proxy for each city's overall growth in technology hiring proxy. what they found is amazing. for every 1% increase in technology workers, there's roughly a .5% increase in home prices above and beyond the national rate of appreciation. now that may not sound like a lot but when you look at big jumps in tech jobs in cities like seattle, austin denver chicago and boston all of these cities, which are seeing above-average price appreciation, are seeing above-average tech growth. except for the outlier which is boston. and that may be because boston has seen an outflow of population due to recent harsh winters. at least according to the report. but overall these are big markets. the ch

. >> mandy, thanks so much.ericans signed contracts to purchase homes in may as pending home sales rose. the very latest on those impressive numbers, diana? >> reporter: yes, scott, it was a gain but not a huge one, 1% and april's number was revised down. this is signed contracts to buy existing homes in may not closings. we are up 10.4% from a year ago to the highest level since april of 2006. pending home sales rose in the northeast and the west but were down in the midwest and south. all regions, though, are seeing gains from a year ago. the final sales number in may was a big jump, but that was off contracts signed in march and april. so why the big slowdown in may? well, look at what happened to mortgage rates. the average rate for 30-year fixed loans went from 3.6% to over 4%. that's from mid april to june. coupled with higher home prices, it did hit affordability pretty hard, scott. >> our next guest went from winning the super bowl to scoring big in the housing market by founding a mortgage company that
