>> mandy, i think this story is very interesting.st of all, we got headlines within the last hour or two as to what was actually happening. after about 12 to 18 hours of a lot of rumors and reports. the cio who has been a frequent guest on our air and in general on the hedge fund speaking circuit is stepping down at the end of the year. he will be taking some equity with him. his shares have been repurchased for $4.50 at a discount to the stock. he's also closing down the fortress macrofund which was a foundational fund for this company. an earlier version of it was born in 2002 under a different name. at their peak, they had $8 billion. recently, it's come to a billion and a half after a series of missteps in the market. they were down 1%. year to date through september though, down 17.5%. now just to put that in perspective, the average hedge fund not doing all that well either. it's down 1.5% roughly year to date according to hfr. the average macrofund is also in the red. but even by that measure, being down 18% is pretty bad. app

cnbc's mandy drury is here with the market rundown. mandy, what's happening?it, after the worst quarter in four years during which the s&p lost nearly 7%. we saw energy and materials naturally some of the worst performers because of the complete commodity meltdown and also health care, surprisingly, was down double digits for its first negative quarter in nearly three years. i guess we're all trying to work out does the fourth quarter mean? the good news is a lot of strategists are still thinking we'll get a bounceback this quarter. it is a seasonally good time for stocks but there are a lot of hurdles. china's slowing economy, a possibly rocky earnings season, watch for commentary, of course, on how china and the strong dollar are affecting companies' outlooks. you've got the debt ceiling issue, what the fed going to do and we got really disappointing manufacturing data today that's partly weighing on the market. and it does also take away from the case two hike by the fed. are all of those worries now completely factored in? of course, the market has had a r

cnbc's mandy drury is here with a market rundown. mandy, good morning to you.e start talking about holidays because it's still way too early for me to talk about it. i know you will. >> yeah. so we got the initial jobless claims that you're referring to as the good data this morning which fell to 263,000 from 276,000 last week. so that's near a 42-year low, and it really does seem that employers at least in certain sectors are keeping a time hold on their employees because it's basically getting tougher to find people with the right skills because the participation rate in the job market is also continuing to fall. so why is the market a little jittery? well, you know, we've got the minutes from the fed's september meeting at 2:00 p.m. eastern. so no one's taking any big bets there. of course we're looking for clarification on a number of things, right? like how close a call was it in september? what exactly do they see as the impact of those developments abroad that supposedly stayed their hand. you know, and also what their view of the job market was because

cnbc's mandy drury is here. mandy, what's going on?t. as you were saying, the biggest single-day loss with that stock. basically it came out with the news that growth over the next three years will be anemic, around sort of 3% to 4%, and profit would drop up to 12% in fiscal 2017. and as you're saying, if you do own walmart shares, i'm afraid they're down about 30% so far this year. so if you're wondering, well, if walmart's losing, who's winning on the flipside? well, if you just take a look at the shares of amazon, for example, those shares are up about 75% this year. so whether people are just going to online sales instead of going into brick-and-mortar stores, that's one theory. also some people have tried to spin this walmart news as possibly a good story about the economy, saying, well, if more people have jobs, more people are getting higher wages, then maybe you'll be trading up from the discount stores. that's one possibility. at this stage, who knows? but, you know, as far as traders and investors in wall part are earn canned

our mandy drury has more. mandy, good morning. what are we seeing? >> good morning as well., and some high profile sort of sector bellwethers have the ability to knock the entire market. case in point you mentioned ibm is weighing on the dow after the revenue fell for the 14th quarter in a row. it also cut the full-year guidance. once again disappointing the market and pushing shares to levels last seen fik octobers ago. you also have other names contributing to the general lackluster mood in the market, like harley-davidson dropping like a stone. >>> we were talking about this as we headed into the break, all said for another big holiday season. what are we expecting? >> amazon is planning to hire -- for the holiday season. this is a 25% jump, and it's also on top of 25,000 people, but you're absolutely right, it is a sign of the times. if you look at some of the other retailers that are largely brick-and-more tar stores, hiring is expected to remain unchanged. i do a lot of my holiday shopping on amazon as well, so i'm partly responsible. >> your holiday shopping, heck, in
