mandy clark reports from the scene. >> reporter: it's not the size of the attack but the location that makes this bombing shocking. it happened in the safest province in afghanistan, panjshir valley, 60 miles north of kabul. the target-- an american base, focused primarily on development projects. the attack happened at 5:00 a.m. this morning. a car bomb exploded outside these gates, punching a hole in them, and then four suicide bombers entered the base. one was shot dead and three detonated, but they only killed themselves. a quick reaction force arrived to help secure the base and investigate the scene. they also fingerprinted one of the bodies to find out if the attacker was a known insurgent. army lieutenant colonel jason fry says this attack was a failure. >> they didn't accomplish their mission. they were all killed, every one of them, and they didn't breach our security, so i don't know what they were trying to accomplish, other than to lower their numbers. >> reporter: security in the valley was handed over to the afghan forces in july. they admit the bombing here took them by

( baby crying ) >> reporter: this is the sound of afghanistan's future. in larger cities, maternity care is improving. more beds are being added, modern equipment coming online. but this kind of care is a world away for most afghans. we visited the province of badahkshan earlier this year this area once recorded the world's highest maternal mortality rate. 6,500 mothers died per 100,000 births. in america it's just 13. for a pregnant woman, traveling this terrain to a clinic is nearly impossible. only one in four births here take place under professional care so even the smallest medical issue can be fatal. >> reporter: in this case, the mother got to the clinic just in time. her baby's heart rate was very accelerated. doctors and midwives quickly stabilized her and safely delivered her new baby daughter. >> reporter: many girls here are married off before they're even 16. and infants born to

cbs news correspondent mandy clark is in kabul with the very latest. mandy, good morning. >> good morning. >> reporter: the attack happened around 11:00 in the morning as it was traveling -- u.s. convoy was traveling near the afghan parliament. a car bomb struck the side of an armored bus that was carrying u.s. troops and it burst into flames. cbs news has been told six americans were killed and six others were injured. the nato forces have not confirmed those numbers. helicopters landed near the scene to pick up many of those casualties according to eyewitnesses. afghan police also say that at least four civilians were also caught up in the bombing, killing one school child. the taliban have claimed responsibility for the attack. they say the bomber was driving with 1,500 pounds of explosives when he hit the convoy. now, u.s. convoys are often targeted, but rarely are these bombings so deadly. the taliban said they will continue to target u.s. forces until all foreign forces leave afghanistan. >> mandy clark in kabul with the latest on this breaking st
