mandy clark is in kabul. >> reporter: afghans took to the streets for a six day expressing their rage over the koran burning by u.s. soldiers at bagram air base last week. protestors in northern afghanistan threw a hand grenade into a u.s. base injuring seven american special forces on a training mission there. and a manhunt continues for the afghan policeman who shot and killed two american officers at the interior ministry where they worked as advisors. the alleged gunman is 25-year-old abdul saboor, police have detained his family members and now all foreign military and civilian advisors have been pulled back from their posts across afghanistan. the move puts american's mission into question. but u.s. ambar does ryan crocker is talking tough. >> this is not the time to desaid that we're done here. we have got to redouble our efforts. we've got to create a situation in which al qaeda is not coming back. >> reporter: militants are trying to use this anti-american sentiment to their own advantage. encouraging more afghan soldiers to turn their guns on their mentors. there is a danger

mandy clark, cbs news, kabul. >> pelley: seven u.s. marines serving here in this country were killed last night when two helicopters collided during night time training. the wreckage fell into the california desert near arizona. crews train there for afghanistan. there's no word yet on how it happened. the f.b.i. held a classified conference call today to discuss a potential threat to the united states from iranian agents. the call pulled together 56 f.b.i. field offices and was led by the bureau's chief of counter-terrorism. with details on all of this, we're joined by cbs "this morning" correspondent john miller and a former assistant director of the f.b.i. john, what was the purpose of that conference call? >> this was really to mobilize the effort of the f.b.i. across the country, to ask the special agents in charge questions like, "how many cases do you have involving iran? how many cases do you have involving hezbollah subjects? really what they were trying to do was get all the field offices in place that are not in new york, wa

and mandy clark is in kabul with the latest. mandy, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. well, we're hearing that an american colonel and a major are dead in a shooting incident at the ministry of interior. they were advisers at the ministry of interior, and it's currently on lockdown. there has been demonstrations across the country today. six are dead and over 60 have been injured when they were trying to storm government compounds in eastern afghanistan and also when protesters tried to overrun a u.n. compound in the north. five days on, and the protesters are still boiling with rage. angry crowds targeting u.s. bases, foreign missions and government buildings. many have also clashed with security forces. they are venting their fury on anyone seen to be working with the american military. on monday, u.s. soldiers accidentally burned copies of the koran along with regular garbage. president barack obama has apologized for the mistake but has done little to temper the anger here. the demonstrations have also spread to neighboring pakistan. they burned american flags and

we get the latest now from mandy clark in kabul. >> reporter: for six days, afghans have taken to the streets, venting their rage over the koran burning. the violent clashes have left dozens dead, and four americans have been killed in apparent retaliation attacks. yesterday two american officers, a colonel and a major, were shot dead in the ministry of interior where they work as advisors. 25-year-old abdul sabur, an afghan police officer, is the main suspect. the taliban claimed responsibility for the attacks, and all nato advisors have been pulled back out of security concerns. last thursday an afghan soldier shot and killed two other american troops in a base along the pakistani border. that evening general john alan, the commander of nato forces in afghanistan, went to visit the base. telling his men now is not the time for vengeance. today president karzai addressed the afghan public and pleaded for calm. he gave his condolences to the american people and said an investigation into the koran burning incident was still ongoing. for sunday morning, this is mandy clark in kabul. >>

mandy clark is in kabul this morning. mandy, good morning. >> reporter: good morning.here are shous of protesters across afghanistan taking to the streets and demanding blood. in kabul and elsewhere, they're chanting death to america. most of the protests are happening outside u.s. military bases. this was always expected to be the largest and most passionate protest of the week after friday prayers. but so far we haven't seen the violence that was expected. there were riot police who were out on the streets early and at times they outnumbered the protesters. general john allen a nato commander in afghanistan also asked the afghan people for patience and restraint saying that the investigation into the koran burning is pushing ahead. >> the word from the nato commander. in terms of afghans on the ground, we've heard about calls to attack. what about calls to a draw down the demonstrations? >> reporter: well, yesterday there was a meegt of religious leaders in kabul. although they are outraged about the burning of the quran they did not encourage the people to protest o

mandy clark is in the capital of kabul. she joins us this morning. mandy, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. nine people are dead when a car bomb exploded outside an airport. this is just the latest attack in a week of violence that erupted after american soldiers mistakenly burned copies of the quran last monday. the suicide car bomber detonated outside the gates of jalalabad airport, which is also a u.s. military base. the explosion was timed as american forces were changing from night to morning guard duty. 25 people were injured, including four u.s. troops. the taliban claimed responsibility saying it was in retaliation to the quran burning. the fury over the incident has seen days of protests and targeted attacks on americans. yesterday, demonstrators threw a hand grenade into a crowd injuring seven american special forces. on saturday, an afghan policeman murdered two american officers inside the ministry of interior. father of two, colonel john loftus, was a decorated airman and worked as the chief plans adviser for the ministry. he died
