manuel bojorquez has the story. >> reporter: search teams today reached the site where 100-ton woulders a popular hiking trail. they recovered all five bodies despite unstable ground and the threat of more falling rocks. chafee county sheriff pete palmer. >> you see the steepest of the slope, you've seen the size of these boulders, this was a risky, risky operation to carry out by all volunteers, members of this community. >> reporter: dwayne and dawna johnson and their 18-year-old daughter kiowa died in the collapse, along with two cousins visiting from missouri. only 13-year-old grace johnson survived with a broken leg. she told rescuers her father died trying to shield her. jennifer eggelston is a family friend. >> we may never get over this. they were so much a part of every single thing that we ever did. you won't be able to find one person in this town that they did not touch. they were a big part of everything. >> reporter: the loss in this town of 2,000 is felt deeply at buena vista high school. the johnsons both coached here, their daughters were students. today classmates mour

manuel bojorquez talked to some of the ranchers. >> reporter: nothing could prepare scott and his wifea for what the melting snow has revealed. so there are parts out there where there were dead cows as far as the eye could see in >> yes. >> pelley: what was that like to see? >> after a while you almost get numb. you come upon another one and you come upon another one. >> pelley: >> we just -- we were just, well what can you do? >> reporter: south dakota's cattle were still in summer pastures when the blizzard hit. they had not grown out their winter coats. the animals were fully exposed to blinding snow and 70 mile per hour winds. some wandered for miles before collapsing and suffocating in snowdrifts. >> the day after the storm i started counting cattle that were dead of ours and, you know, i just -- i had the -- i got sick to my stomach. >> reporter: these tags belonged to the 200 animals he lost, that's nearly half his herd. other ranchers lost everything. >> my biggest fear is that people that lost livestock won't be able to recover. you pray for them and you hope that, you know,

manuel bojorquez is in nathrop. good morning. >> good morning, one survivor is in the hospital this morning but the bodies of five others remain buried in a canyon along this command post. no one knows how long recovery efforts will take. what they do know, this tragedy unfolded in an instant. >> reporter: the rock slide struck monday morning in a popular hiking area about 2 1/2 hours southwest of denver. >> got a call at 11:00 this morning fray hiker above the falls. she was hiking up there at the time. witnessed a large rockfall, lockslide, off the hill above her. >> reporter: emergency responders were able to rescue 13-year-old gracie johnson and airlift her to children's hospital near denver. doctors there are not revealing details of her condition. but the local sheriff is saying she suffered a broken leg and is expected to recover. others weren't as fortunate. >> the coroner went to the scene and confirmed there are five dead people at the scene. >> reporter: authorities say the slide included boulders the siz

manuel bojorquez is in stchlt onge, south dakota. manuel. >> it's being called one of the worst disasters in south dakota history. the herd were still in summer pastures and had not grown winter coats. south dakota's $7 billion livestock industry will be digging out for years to come. the numbers are astounding. tens of thousands of dead cattle are being collected from south dakota's western prairie. on october 3rd, an unusual snowstorm blanketed 100 miles stranding animals where they froze to death and many more could die in the months to come. >> as the snow came over the top, it literally started burying them. >> reporter: he lost over 200 cattle. >> the worst thing is we had two inches of rain followed with 3 feet of snow so not only was the ground wet, the cattle sunk into it. many of them drowned. >> reporter: others lost 80% to 90% of their herd. it's catastrophic. >> by losing the cows themselves, they've lost paychecks from years to come. >> reporter: the blizzard coming just days after 80 degree weather brought winds of 70 m
