manuel gallegus is in chicago where they are expecting two feet of snow. >>> reporter: it's an army of plows and civilians with shovels against a storm stretching more than 2,000 miles. blowing snow and white-out conditions are paralyzing states across the plains. >> playing dodgeball with cars. >> reporter: even professional drivers are finding the roads too treacherous. >> i felt the truck -- it went on me to the side. i had to let go of the accelerator but yeah it's scary. >> reporter: in tulsa, oklahoma, emergency workers who had to be out in the severe weather weren't getting anywhere fast. in dallas, tractor-trailers were no match for the sheet of ice coating the highways. the severe weather is covering about a third of the nation. even from space, it's not a pretty picture. forecasters say chicago is in for one of the biggest storms in the city's history. the wind is already whipping up and some 400 trucks are standing by ready to deal with snow that could fall three to four inches an hour. >> are you prepared? >> well, i live pretty close to the grocery store so... manuel gallegus is in chicago, where schools shut down for a snow day for the first time in 12 years, right, manuel? >> reporter: that's right. it's unusual, sydnie, this storm was big. the sky is finally starting to brighten up now and the worst of the storm is over. but it snowed basically for the last 24 hours straight. and this winter blast did definitely live up to the hype, even some winter chicago veterans caught off guard and stranded. >> reporter: the monster storm has buried america's third largest city. >> i think it lived up to what everybody was talking about. >> reporter: chicago streets are deserted except for the workers cleaning them and those who have to get to the office. >> i have to go put in payroll or something. no one is getting paid. >> reporter: carolina spent the night downtown so she could walk to work but hundreds who tried to use lake shore drive to get home found themselves stranded for hours. >> efforts to get these cars or motorist were severely hampered by the ongoing accumulation, high snow drifts and extremely poor weather conditions. >> reporter: a

manuel gallegus reports from hard-hit chicago. >> reporter: the sky above downtown chicago is finally clear. after a massive snowstorm lived up to its hype, dumping more than 20 inches in 24 hours. now forecasters are warning another powerful punch is on the way. the mercury is expected to plunge to 20 to 30 degrees below zero. >> stay in. >> reporter: even hours after the snow stopped falling, more than 200 cars, trucks and buses were still stuck along the city's iconic lake shore drive. >> 200, 202, 203 -- >> reporter: the heavy snow and blinding drifts after lake michigan left some vehicles looking more like igloos. drivers had no choice but to abandon their cars or wait to be rescued. >> we were trapped on lake shore drive for like seven hours. >> reporter: chicago wasn't the only place hit hard. by the time it was over the storm had stretched more than 2,000 miles across 30 states. in glenwood, minnesota, the roof collapsed on this hardware store. >> i run back into the back home, and hit the floor, the building's coming down! >> reporter: dark signal lights in austin, texas, wer
