manu raju on capitol hill. we'll be watching how that plays out. two of the races we're watching closely tonight are the senate races in missouri and texas. we have reporters live in both of those states. ed lavandera is in l el paso, texas, at the headquarters for beto o'rourke. rebecca berg is in missouri at the headquarters for josh hawley. first to rebecca. polls show this race in a dead heat. president trump was rallying support there for hawley just last night. how does hawley feel? i saw he was behind in one poll, but it seems pretty neck and neck. >> reporter: that's right, jake. it's been neck and neck for pretty much this entire race. so both sides today very nervous going into tonight. no one knows how this race is going to turn out. that might be surprising to some of our viewers when you consider that president trump won the state of missouri by 19 points in 2016, but the politics here are a little more complicated. it's not a straight partisan state. in 2016 when president trump dominated here, republican senator roy blunt only won re

let's start with manu raju on capitol hill. manu?> democrats very confident they would take back the house tonight, a significant turning point for the trump white house. the question is, how big of a majority they may ultimately have. senior democratic officials are trying to downplay talk of a major blue wave. they do believe they could pick up seats, perhaps 30, 35 seats, which would give them a 10 to 15-seat majority. pick up the 40 and beyond would amount to a much more significant size majority at the moment. democrats do not believe it will be that big of a majority. ultimately now, that could, of course, change, depending on how those first results come in, particularly in the states of new jersey, florida. if they do better than expected, expect those expectations to change. right now they're feeling good about their chances and it appears they could be on the cusp of regaining control of at least the house, jake. >> manu raju on capitol hill. pamela brown, what are they thinking inside that building? >> reporter: jake, the

manu raju is live on capitol hill.rats just days away from leadership elections, like a lot of us have learned to take with a grain of salt, challenges to her leadership, because she seems to come out on top. but what's happening now? is she getting closer to the votes she needs? >> today, jim, a rebellious faction of democrats released a letter trying to show that they believe that they have enough votes to deny her the speakership on the house floor. 16 democrats, both incoming freshmen and some current members signed that letter, saying they're committed to having new leadership, and trying to make the case that the math just isn't there for nancy pelosi. but there are a lot of caveats. one of the members who signed the letter actually may not win his race. also, uncertain of what some of these members may ultimately do at the end of the day if nancy pelosi is the only democratic candidate standing, come january when it's time to elect a house member. to become speaker, of course, you need 218 votes on the house flo

manu, you wrote in the piece overnight, you said that republican leaders are expressing some level ofat they can avoid a shutdown. how confident are they? >> really, to president trump, you talk to republicans on the hill, they're confidence that they're able to accomplice that. there's several billion dollars. and what the senate has approved $1.6 billion on the senate side, $5 billion on the house side. republicans believe if you look at ways to reprogram some of that money, look at money that has not yet been spent on a border wall, to spit it out over a couple years that could be enough to satisfy those who do want the wall. but is that enough for the president? that's why in today's meeting between the president and house republican leaders can be significant to determine whether the president has any flexibility whatsoever. but on other issues, kate, as far as what democrats have demanded moving forward with the special counsel, democratic leaders tell me that they're not necessarily going to push so hard to force a government showdown on that issue. they expect that vote on the
