maria: mitch?h quarter, not only did the stock market fall out of bed, but the fixed income market did as well. a lot of the structured transactions that places like this count on couldn't find the market. that trickled into the beginning of the first quarter as well and it took a while to ramp the machine up again. maria: the company as you said, dagen, raising the dividend. joining us to talk more about this is vining sparks banking strategy director, marty mosby. looking at goldman sachs, what's your reaction to the numbers this morning? >> well, we are seeing a healthy beat on the eps. and it looks like it's coming from the expense side. goldman sachs has a lot of seasonality built into their expenses. usually they ramp up a little bit in the first quarter and then kind of improve as they have a lower compensation rate as they get in the backend of the year. they may be flattening that out to give us a little better trajectory through the year. but the expense saves we're seeing here is a posit
