our goal is mars. are people, and i think i am one of them, who think skipping the offshore island as we move out into the solar system is not a great idea. nasa is very careful. i mean they work for mr. obama. mr. obama says skip the moon, nasa can't say no. there is no money in the budget to build a moon ranger. so what nasa is saying is we are building a big rocket. we are building the orion spacecraft which was designed for a lunar mission. if someone else build a lunar lander we would be glad to work with them to do a joint mission back to the moon. i hope that sometime in the 2020's that possibility emerges. i don't know the movie "elys ium." you do it inside a closed environment, inside a small space station. you have the artificial environment in which humans could survive. mentioned, aou partner who might build a moon lander. what is the role of private industry in space exploration? guest: there are some entrepreneurs that are very interested in doing things on the moon. programs,some robotic

cooke, i already heard your comments about going to the moon, mar's moon and perhaps mars. what would you recommend is nasa's sls and orion's missions? >> i believe that the sls and orion represent the first critical steps in exploration beyond the earth orbit. you need lift capacity of the space launch system. you need the volume of the payload. >> i understand that. but what do you want our missions to be? >> i think personally there's discussion about lunar space. that is definitely a possibility. it could be a very good intermediate point in mars and a place to send mars missions from. but i do believe in going to the moon. the moop that we know now, based on on spacecraft that have gone there since apollo opened up a different moon than we have seen before. it is much more dramatic in landscapes. we have mapped resources. i think there's a lot to learn if we sent people there. so i think that the moon is still an important place to go on the way to mars eventually. >> mr. dumbacher, do you have anything to add? >> yes, congressman. i think a couple of things i would ad

this is the way to mars. on a good day, this agood day's walk to mars.n miles away, and that is on a good day. you can barely even -- well you can barely see it from here. of course the trip would be farther than that after factors in orbits around the sun and weird things like that. scientist say it will take months and months to get there and we have to develop a system for astronauts to breathe and eat. nasa announced the stoffer of evidence that appears to show liquid water flows on the planet when the place warms up. this despite enormous bills the mission is sure to rack up. seems to be a lot of public support at the moment. the top film at the box office right now is "the martian" about a botched mission to the red planet. it's re-igniting public interest in space. we have a athlete let cal physicist here, we can't even fund the debt. we can't get congress to agree on which bathroom to use. this is an exciting looking project. is it do-able? >> well, matt damon, watch out. mars, here we come. okay? nasa used to be called the agency to nowhere. now
