so what happened with the mar-a-lago pool? in a cnn exclusive, sources say an employee of donald trump trained at the swimming pool last october and ended up flooding a room and the resort, that is a room where the computer servers containing surveillance video logs were kept. so was this just a messy mistake? maybe. but it aroused investigators suspicions because it happened amid a series of events that they found curious. so tonight, we're going to look at those key events at mar-a-lago. also today, donald trump's lawyer spoke to the justice department and met with special counsel jack smith. our panel explains what that tells us. plus, you've heard our school district or banning controversial books, so what about the bible? or the book of mormon? that is happening in one utah school district and our panel has a lot of thoughts on that. and do you always give your uber driver a five star rating? it turns out a lot of us do, and it's not because we think they are great drivers, it's because we are scared. tonight, we will see

mar-a-lago is not a scif. not a secure location. >> the period that we're talking about is from january 2021 until august of 2022. during that time, at least according to the indictment, there were more than 150 social events. there were weddings. there were fund-raisers. there were movie premieres, you name it. so a lot of people coming in and out of the mar-a-lago club while these documents were allegedly there. and we just have to wonder who might have known that these documents were there, who had access to them. did they even know what they were looking at if they saw them? >> i'm confident there are spy handlers around the world who are beating themselves on the head today, wishing that they had sent their own agents into mar-a-lago. it is truly a spy's dream. it's a soft target. we now know it was replete with national defense information. and to think that it was all there for the taking, for anyone with the energy and the determination to go look for it, is just shocking. >> trump is charged with 31 d

"the washington post" was first to report today if trump is indeed criminally charged in the mar-a-lago investigation, the bulk of the indictment against him would be brought in south florida, according to people familiar with the matter. up until now special counsel jack smith has been running most of this investigation out of washington, d.c., but as the guardian reports prosecutors have conclude from the evidence he was still present when classified documents were moved to mar-a-lago, meaning trump's unlawful possession only started in florida. similarly if prosecutors also revealed evidence he'd retained national security evidence after he left office at mar-a-lago for instance by waving them around or showing people, that can prevent hurdles to espionage charges. today we saw interesting developments out of that state, but first a little background. remember it was february of last year when we first learned the national archives had asked trump to return documents he'd taken with him after leaving the white house. in the days after that story broke trump released a statement only

but we start with mar-a-lago. at this point you probably have seen a picture of trump's florida resort, once the winter getaway of areas -- mar-a-lago it is massive. it sits on about 20 acres of land, it has more than 50 bedrooms, and it has all the hallmarks of luxury. all the fancy stuff. italian stone, spanish tiles, a lot of marble, gold plated fixtures, expensive rugs, it also has a golf course and ballroom. a boutique, and not one, but two swimming pools. here they are. one is by the beach, in front, the other sits right in the middle of basically everything. now, i point these pulls out to you not just because pool envy is a real thing, especially in the summer months, but because these pools, one of these pools is now at the center of a special counsel investigation into trump's handling of classified documents. it is at the center of that for a very weird reason. cnn was the first to report that quote, an employee at donald trump's mar-a-lago residents drained the resort's swimming pool last october, and

mar-a-lago is a public area. people come in and out as shocking as that is, you know, the other layer that we're not seeing here in any of the indictment says. what's the motive? why did he do it? what what did he plan to do with this information will bat ever come out? yeah. i think there are a couple elements to hear. one is that you we haven't seen the best evidence, if you will. the prosecutor in the doj, they've held back a number of a number of much more sensitive materials, which means that they're going to have to debate with the intelligence community. what to during these proceedings. once we see where that decision is made and some of these previously secret. >> our compartment secrets are laid out. we'll see what's at stake and the motivation is be important to go fulfillment. but beyond that, it's also to to, you know, trump has never face the fact that he lost to joe biden still sees himself as that de facto president. and so he wants to function that way. and so you use these documents not only for

storage room, they found out he called the mar-a-lago i.t. worker asking how the security cameras worked and how long images remained stored in the system, just asking for a friend, just wondering. again, he's the same guy who drained the pool in october causing a flood in the room where computer servers containing surveillance video were kept. he keeps popping up when things go wrong. so after the pool flood jack smith's office issued a third subpoena asking the trump organization to preserve all additional footage, keep it away from any pools, please. and around that same time in october mr. nauta, the other guy involved in all of this, he reportedly changed lawyers and stopped cooperating with investigators. ee do not know about how the jack smith team learned about the evidence, but for months now we've learned all provided their testimony. so the special counsel probably has a full picture of what has been going down at mar-a-lago all these months. and now that team, the special counsel's team is presumably evaluating whether all these i

which arguably is more momentous in the scale of criminality, potentially, the mar-a-lago?>> i think it is more momentous. certainly, that was the efforts of the january 6th committee, given that it was the first incidents in our history of an attempt to thwart the peaceful transfer of power. if the reporting is accurate, and he's received a target letter on the mar-a-lago investigation, and i don't know if there's any reporting that he's received the same kind of letter on january 6th if he hasn't, that would indicate that the mar-a-lago investigation may be more advanced than january 6th, closer to resolution. but i think, probably, one of the special counsel's thinking right now, the presidential campaign is getting further and further along. the department wants to act as far in advance of the election as possible. so as not to be perceived as influencing the election. so, i think he probably feels, and should feel, a sense of urgency. they've taken far too long to get to this point, before the special counsel is brought on board. but he seems to be moving with great sp

"the times" reports that in addition to the search for classified documents down at mar-a-lago special counsel jack smith's team also went over to the bedminster property and went over that with a fine toothed comb. smith subpoenaed surveillance video and after the fbi searched mar-a-lago last summer, they were concerned that trump still had more documents stashed at bedminster. "the times" then goes onto describe yet another document saga much like the one we already knew about at mar-a-lago in which smith's office, again, after having already searched mar-a-lago, asked trump to provide a sworn statement that everything had been turned over. trump refused. smith's office then tried to get a subpoena so that they could search the bedminster property. but minutes -- literally minutes before his hearing one of trump's lawyers alerted the court that trump's legal team had a team of professionals with military training searching bedminster for classified materials. smith's team got the judge to force trump's legal team to sign a statement saying exactly which parts of bedminster had been s

we know how it went down at mar-a-lago. it really looks like jack smith did his homework on this one. here's the thing, at least so far, special counsel jack smith does not appear to be charging trump for what it seems that he did on that tape. over at bedminster. there is no charge, not a single charge in trump's indictment about the dissemination of classified materials. there are not even charges for anything that happened in the state of new jersey. so far, the special counsel has just narrowly charged trump with 31 counts of the willful retention of national defense information. three counts of withholding or concealing documents in a federal investigation, two counts of making false statements to the fbi, and one count of obstruction of justice. all of that is in the state of florida. what dispensed counsel jack smith to hear? why has he, at least so far, why has he not used this tape as a smoking gun to charge donald trump with more crimes? this is actually one of the rare cases in which we have sort of a hint from t

remember, mar-a-lago is not his own. he has a residence on what is a resort. it is a club, it is an expensive club to join, i believe it is now a couple hundred thousand dollars to join mar-a-lago, but this private club hosted 150 events from january 2001 -- excuse me, 2021, january 2021, when trump left august, to august 2022, there were 150 events. we are talking about weddings, fundraisers, you name it. we're talking about more than 10,000 people. there is mar-a-lago right there. so they were first in the white and gold ballroom. well, than they had to move that. sometimes they were in the lake room, then the trump family suite and pine hall, then the storage area ordered to be cleared out. that storage area is by a door to the pool where everybody hangs out in right by where they keep all of the liquor. it is an area where there is a lot of staff that work on that property. it's a resort. it's a club, y, you know, it's a lot of people hanging around there, walking in and out. why should documents, as this indictment alleges, where there are many top-secret

it caused months of delay for prosecutors after the mar-a-lago search. decisions that were ultimately overturned in a scathing ruling by the 11th circuit court of appeals. let's bring in our team. the former president will be arraigned on tuesday. and garrett haake is in new jersey where the president is today. ari melber is the msnbc chief legal correspondent and host of "the beat" and andrew weissmann served as former fbi general counsel and helped lead robert mueller's investigation in 2016. you know him so well. i'm sure you can say his title by heart. i want to start with you, garrett. and i want to start with a name we haven't mentioned in the last hour, mark meadows. what do we know about mark meadows? >> very little. we know that it has been reported that he has testified in front of the special counsel in perhaps both buckets of the special counsel's investigations here. both the classified documents piece of this and the january 6th attempts to set aside the 2020 election results pieces. there was some reporting that i got very aggressive brush

some of the boxes were stored in a mar-a-lago bathroom, including the shower. they ended up in a storage room that could be reached by multiple outside entrances, including one accessible from the patio. that matters because these nuclear secrets, these military plans, they were in places we don't know who had access to them. this photograph shows the contents of some boxes, including classified materials, spilled all over the floor. the unsealing of the indictment by special counsel jack smith this week marks the beginning, not the end of this process. that's why it's so important to know all the details. the fate of donald trump will be decided in a courtroom, were jury of his peers will hear his case. as jack smith said, he must be presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. that, by the way, is how the system is supposed to work. yes, this is jarring. this is sobering. it is a lot to take, and although this is a riveting indictment to read. i've heard the indictment referred to as a sad day in america over the last couple days. to me, t
