mara liasson. "national public radio" and syndicated columnist charles krauthammer.hat about the president starting this sales pitch in iowa and what the white house is thinking about whether it's an uphill climb to really sell it? >> definitely an uphill climb to sell it on the other hand, the quinnipiac poll which still shows the approval 9 -- disapproval nine points ahead of approval better. something like 55-39. the point is they got a little bounce so far. the big question is can they turn this into either a reversal or at least even it out. now, they have been saying for a very long time and it was part of the sales job to members of congress is that once this thing passed. we have a victory. it's the law of the land. there are facts on the ground. that's going to change the political dynamic and people are going to look at this bill and find all sorts of things they like in it. that might happen. we don't know that yet. we still don't know if we are at the high water mark of opposition to health care or just going to grow and grow. i think that's an open quest

mara, almost does president obama have riding on the vote today?es victory and converse defeat mean for the presidency? >> it means a tremendous amount. the cost to him of this failing are almost immeasurable. i think his presidency would be pretty much crippled and he would have failed to get a signature initiative and the democrats could look like they can't govern. how much does he gain? i think he gains less than the amount he would lose if it fails but he could go out and argue about what the bill actually does instead of something that is theory ethical. the question for me is, is this the high water mark of the opposition or as the republicans predict this will become the number one issue in every race in the fall and the president might want to pivot to jobs and the economy and we will be talking about healthcare forever. i don't know yet. >> let me bring that up with brit because if healthcare reform does become law it seems clear as winston churchill said this is not the beginning of the end, just the end of the beginning. there will be l

mara, we are seeing several areas in which just in the first week the bill isn't living up to the advanced>> first, the white house needs to rally the businesses who feel they will get a benefit and have them start talking about it. what has happened this week is that although the polls haven't moved in my big way, there has been a slight narrowing of the difference between the positive and negative feelings about this. there is still more negative than positive. but for democrats, what is important for mid-term is the intensity among the democratic base, the number of democrats who are strongly supportive of this has come way up. and it's beginning at least to balance out the strongly negative feelings that the republican have been riding among their base. we don't know yet if this is the high water mark, if it will grow or dissipate. one problem i think the white house will have and they have to come up with an answer to this is that premiums are likely to go up, and they might even start going up in a lot of places before november. before all of the things that would keep premiums down
