i'm mara tellez. protesters are taking to the streets in new york city, los angeles where they shut down a freeway down south, and in oakland where they burned the american flag. nbc bay area's christie smith joins us live in oakland with a look at the aftermath and more protests, christie, are planned for tonight. >> reporter: yeah, that's what we're hearing. we just heard from oakland mayor jean quan about this and she's calling for vandals who come into the city to stop. we spoke with residents and business owners who are frustrated. many business owners had their windows completely smashed over the weekend. this is following the acquittal of george zimmerman in florida for the shooting death of teenager trayvon martin. this morning city workers painted overy6 graffiti. they fixed rows of broken windows downtown at chase bank, wells fargo also boarded up. a city spokesperson believes that the majority of the vandalism in oakland happened saturday night. crowds returned sunday much more peaceful. ma

. >> do you think there's more and more speculation now that mark owe mara will not put george zimmermanon the stand? what do you think? >> i don't see why he should. you will have videotape statements from him where he is walking through the scene. he has already given -- you have seen audio. there is written statement. there's a plethora of evidence from george zimmerman himself that is not subject to cross-examination. so why put him to the test. whenever you put a defendant on, it is a one-witness trial at that point. if the jury doesn't like him or believe him, he is going down at that point. so i don't see the -- i don't see any reason to put him on. >> if the prosecution doesn't put any of those george zimmerman, you know, testimonials in front of the jury, can mark o' mara do it? >> well that's the thing. he can't be done to avoid it but it is already in. the witness that is testifying now admitted his taped statements that evening and written statements that evening. so his statements are already in evidence. and next wur you're going to see videos. then perhaps the fox news's m

our correspondent joins us from the mara cana. >> what sort of turnout was there on the streets? >> well, interestingly there were more security forces on the street here inner protest than there were protestors. we don't know if that's a sign that the movement is shrinking or losing momentum. what we do know is that brzail wasn't going to take any risk in keeping this game safe and protected. they have a huge security perimeter around the maracana stadium which you can still see in the background. only a small group of the 5,000 or so protestors ended up having a violent cop front tation with police. about 1,000 less made it close to the stay yum about three blocks away. it got really rough when protestors sponned to police. they smoked protestors down several streets until they cleared this area. the smoke was so strong that some people in the stadium had to cover their faces with some napkins or towels because the tear gas was so strong in the air here. >> adam, you've been covering these protests for some time now. are they gaining traction across the country. is it likely to
