itself through trading and marblehead's fortunes are made on fish, cod is the commodity and marblehead and it's a third of the economy in massachusetts in 1774. they fish the grand banks in the grand banks are some of the most treacherous waters in the world it is icy and thousands of miles away from boston but they sail up there and they fish andut thy gather fish and it's a life-and-death situation many times against the giant waves in storms but they're working together and marblehead is a diverse community it has native americans, three african-americans, has hispanic americans, these individuals are ahead of their time in many ways and say progressive towns for its time, many of the men in the indispensable's are urban abolitionists there at the forefront of american civil rights before there were civil rights and they were pushing for the abolition of slavery including john glover, it is these crews that are diverse working together but it's also a situation where the crown is integrated with their lives. in their interfering with their lives in john glover is threatened by the b

the other group is exhausted in the >> to marblehead. but that groupma that stays, they fight at the battle of princeton, and they change the course of history. the ten crucial days that changed the course of history in these three battles. it is the marble headers there in the four and make a difference. but the story does not end there. and what i mean by that is it's a marblehead or once again saves thece army. i will get to that story in a minute. but first i want to go through several of the characters of the book so that you get a feel for what this book is about. the first character if you will or individual i like to rahighlight is john glover. he is the central character of the indispensable's. john glover is a self-made man. he fights her in the french and indian war, he is a cobbler. he is also a bartender. with the money he makes from bartending and cobbling shoes he is able to buy a ship. and then he is able to buy more ships. he built a fleet of ships and becomes a very wealthy man within marblehead itself through trading.

in marblehead that sort of speaks to this exact question and it happens after i trace an outbreak that doesn't consume the whole town but still sort of shows the stakes of this and what it means to have social relations of contagion and how the town is getting involved and so forth in 1773 start starting in june and i follow this family and there there was the bowens in july but later on marblehead has in 1774 a riot around this question of binoculation. and in brief, there is a smallpox hospital. it's built essentially with private funds and the town sort of feels maybe bamboozled into having agreed to it and there's an effort to try to to not have the project go forward and eventually it's constructed on cation island and the critique of this is that elite people are going to it and most important with this because they have the means it's expensive in this private regime to pay for it. most important that it's some kind of violation of the community contract. that is if only a few people can get inoculated here. what about the rest of them and particularly what happens with inoculat

from there, the army goes back across the delaware thanks to the marblehead men and it's unfortunately a little worse than the trip over because captureded the rum supply and it was a drunken cruise back over and several men fell over but capture most of the regimen in a large stand ofrg arms and then it sets up roughly a week later, the second battle of the creek where washington doesn't necessarily want to fight but his hand is sort of forced by a militia group, but off you associate or switch go a little early without order and washington decides to reinforce them and they hold a key bridge against all odds. the marvel head regiment was hard to tell, he stays with washington. the other group is exhausted and go back but that group is saved, they fight at the battle of princeton they change the course of history. the ten crucial aids that change the crew course of history in battle and as marvel headers, they are in the fourth that make a difference but the story doesn't end there and what i mean by that is the marble header that once again saves the army and i'll get to that story i
