california governor gavin newsom signing a bill from assembly member marc berman of menlo park yesterdayg a growing number of states to do so. abc7 news reporter tara campbell shares why this added subjects it couldn't be more important. >> from deep fakes to false stories, california students will soon be getting a lesson in navigating news. governor newsom signing a bill into law saturday day mandating media literacy be taught in k through 12 classrooms as use of the internet grows and as technologies like ai become more sophisticated and misinformation becomes more complicated. >> we think it's important that california's young people are taught media literacy standards. >> the move comes as a growing number of young people are turning to social media to stay informed. a recent survey from common sense and surveymonkey showing 55% of teenagers are getting their news from social media at least three times a week. and according to a 2020 survey from the pew research center, the majority of teens today use youtube and tiktok every day. and some report using these sites almost constantly.

joining us live now to talk about its impact is the author of the bill, assemblyman marc berman from menlo park. assemblyman berman, thanks for your time. >> thanks for having me, kristen . >> so tell us, what will this law require for so you alluded to it, but as we know, so many youth these days get their news from social media, from the internet, from tiktok, youtube, twitter. >> and we know that there's a ton of misinformation and disinformation that's being spread. and so this law requires that we integrate media literacy curriculum into the four core subject areas in school english, math history and science. so that our young people can be more critical consumers of the information that they're being inundated with on on practically on a minute by minute basis. and that they have the skills to be able to differentiate. wait, what's what's true and what isn't. and know how to go and do their own research to determine whether or not something is a fact. >> i see. well, what recent events highlighted the need for media literacy for kids is, i think we've seen a lot of really impor

and assembly member marc berman agrees. he authored the bill january 6th and the attack on the capitol of the united states is a perfect example of that. >> where the big lie lies about the accuracy of our elections spread like wildfire on social media, and people believed it. a recent stanford study showing more than 80% of middle school students couldn't discern between a sponsored advertis moment and a news story. >> we think it's important that california's youth are taught all these skills so that they're able to effectively engage in civil society. >> tara campbell, abc7 news. >> now here is a video that would be hard for anybody to figure out what was going on. this is plane traveling into san francisco is seemingly defying the laws of physics. it appears to just be sitting still in the air. it's gone viral. it was taken by a man from the window of a nearby plane. the video is actually an optical illusion. it's called the parallax effect. it's a type of visual illusion in which the position of a moving object appears
