you know, you got to announce it and marc caputo joins me now. so marc, what is the latest that you're hearing on whether he's already made a decision or what it's down to at this point for him well, you never know when trump has made a decision until trump says he's made a decision now he says he has, but he hasn't made the announcement. so who knows, but it still looks like the top three front runners from the buzz of those who've spoken to him and spoken a top campaign aides, allies, and confidants that is jd vance looks like he's sort of in the catbird seat along with doug burgum and rubio looks like he's sort of in third place, but this is all sort of speculation about what trump will do or say and it's very risky predicting that until he does or says it yeah. no. i mean, i was talking to marco rubio the other day and you can't have two people from florida on the same ticket. he'd have to move residency. i mean, yeah, he's sort of dodge that question, but but there are some logistical challenges to that pac. when can we expect to find out? >

marc caputo, sir. great to see you this morning. what seems to be invoking the reporting world this morning is talking about the race to define vice president kamala harris? no, course, as with most things, you were out ahead by a day or two on this story talking about how the trump campaign in hopes to use a willie horton like strategy to define her for our viewers who are not alive in 1988, what does that mean in 1988, when vice president bush was running for president successfully. >> so against michael dukakis, an outside political group, ran a rather blistering ad against dukakis because he was the massachusetts governor who while in office, had a man named willie horton. are william horton commit a murder went or pardon me, commit a rape. when he was on furlough from prison where he had been incarcerated for murder. and it was used to paint by the bush campaign and the push allies dukakis as soft on crime. you're going to see similar things like that coming from the trump campaign. and trump's allies, in fact, trump started a

now, and we're also joined by marc caputo. he's a national political reporter for the bulwark. alright. there were a lot of people auditioning for this role you know, i wonder how people were sort of smiling through irritation and frustration. but if the tone is to change toward unity, and you have that senator jd vance tweets what is it say about the choice? >> well, it says about the choices that it's about unity, right? you're going to talk about all we need, all come together and we need to unite as a country. but at the same time, you're going to have your attack dog who goes out there and tears apart the other people who don't get in line. that's the point. that's the purpose of jd fans and on the day of the assassination attempt, jd vance went right into that role even before he was picked. he just went right out there. he started attacking the media. he started attacking democrats, congressman, end. he also started attacking joe biden. he was basically auditioning ahead of time i'm saying, look trump. this is what i'm going to do. >> cashier the others couple of mouth d

i want to go straight to marc caputo of the bulwark he has been reporting on trump's inner circle for years. so marc, you just heard tom and there are plenty of things for trump to try to go after harris on the question is, as he tries all these things is there any consensus or does he have a sense about what he thinks will work i think the main thing that they're going to go after on immigration and her record as a prosecutor to the degree that they frame her or attempt to frame room as being soft on crime. >> i think those are going to be the two through lines. you're going to see through about the race. recently, just in the past few hours, they began talking about transgender related issues. as regards california policy when she was attorney general there. so i imagine that's going to crop up as well. but as for a consensus know right now, i think you said it was just said a second ago that this is sort of a kitchen sink strategy that could throw the kitchen sink at are the refrigerator, the oven, the microwave, everything. >> all right. so here's the thing though. some of these a

and marc caputo of the bulwark was reporting today that one issue that obviously the knives have been out for everyone in these last few weeks is trump is getting ready to make his pick. one issue that could go jd vance's way is his facial hair and obviously you have a famous mustache and it was something that the washington post reported 2016 was part of a wide trump passed over for being secretary of state. i mean, is that actually something that you think would go into his consideration? >> well, trump denied it to me later, pointing out that his father had a mustache, so i don't know if that was deep i believe freud in or what, but vance does have a beer, maybe maybe trump's experience with me will be enough to knock vance out of contention because things and then by association, ambassador john bolton, thank you for joining us. so we'll see what the pickets glad to be with you. great to have you the prospect of another trump presidency. so you have something that the ambassador knows well about, well about has rattled some of our allies in nato also, ukrainian president zelenskyy

now, marc caputo, national political reporter at the bulwark, who broke this story and mark all of this is your brand new reporting. so i mean, just how it look ten days ago or two weeks go. anybody talking about this potential switch on the democratic side they thought that harris, they want harris, they wanted anybody but harris and it was the same thinking in the trump campaign. now, it's harris and you see the energy and you see the surge in the polls and all those elites got it completely wrong. how much of this take trump's campaign off? guard i think not the switching out, the switcheroo of biden and harris or biden with harris. >> but the blowing up of kamala harris being a miami resident, i think in terms of hurricanes. and this looks like a tropical storm that found the right patch of warm water and the gulf of mexico and rapidly really intensified into a hurricane and what the trump campaign is realizing is we have to batten down the hatches and we need to execute a new game plan and do it rather flawlessly because they are in a real tough fight now and they weren't just what

we have reporting coming out, actually, from marc caputo today at "the bulwark" about this. the trump campaign had prepared a campaign to run against joe biden. they did. that was what they were -- that's what they believed was going to happen. even in the midst of the post-debate despair among democrats, they thought that biden would probably survive. then it became clear he couldn't. now, they're scrambling. it doesn't mean that they never knew how to attack kamala harris. it doesn't mean they hadn't prepared attack lines for kamala harris, but it is a wholly different election now. all that slack in democratic enthusiasm that was there has quickly been made up. not only that, but we're seeing some potential to expand what had been a narrowed map. joe biden's path was clearly the industrial midwest, michigan, pennsylvania, wisconsin. the last two days, you saw polls from georgia that show almost a statistically tied race. this is going to revamp a lot of resources. now, the challenge, of course, is on both sides, right? like, kamala harris has been vice president for 3 1/2

then i think the fourth thing is, and this is something my colleague, marc caputo, captured in his piece, looking at how they're responding to this kamala harris boomlet, is trump's views, politics is downstream from culture. he, obviously, is a product of tv, and he was able to manipulate that and use that to become a political figure. what he sees in harris's rise is she's becoming a cultural phenomenon. i think that's very difficult for him to process and deal with because it can be very politically potent. it's causing him to have difficulty adjusting. you know, they've planned this campaign around biden. now, they have to revamp it around harris. it's not like you can just attack her sort of as a traditional liberal, which they're going to do. you have to attack on a variety of fronts. she's becoming a cultural phenomenon, too. >> yeah. to say that jd vance's rollout has been rough is pretty kind there, sam. we'll have much more on that in a little bit. >> i'm trying to be kind, okay? >> very generous way to start the week, i suppose. we're going to get more to that in a minute. fir
