let's bring back the national urban league president marc morial, he's in new york.ith missouri congressman lacey clay. thanks to both of you joining us. congressman, you heard president obama announcing more funding for body cameras, more training. but this incident in new york, it was all captured on video, 23 members of the grand jury decided not to indict. so what does that say about the value of videotape? >> well, that's the thing that really just amazed me is that you do have video and audio evidence. and this grand jury couldn't bring themselves to bring any charges on a group of police officers, from the evidence it suggests that they pretty much jumped on this guy, and beat him to death. and so it's displaying to me that the grand jury couldn't bring back any charge. and it's disappointing, which talks about -- which talks to the fact that some americans still don't believe that black lives are worth the same as other american lives. >> either that or marc morial, or there's still a really high bar, if you're going to indict a police officer who is working

for some insight into all of this, we're joined tonight by marc morial, a former mayor of new orleans, now president and c.e.o. of the national urban league. mr. morial, what do you see in the eric garner case in new york? >> you know, the decision of the grand jury, scott, seemed to defy common sense. this case was a case where there's a video which allows us to for the most part see a man being surrounded by five police officers and then a chokehold, and then he's dead. so it's a travesty of justice the decision of the grand jury. but it also just deifies, i think, a lot of people's common sense in that they saw what happened and the sense is that there should be a charge coming out of this incident. >> pelley: now, some reasonable people say that michael brown in ferguson had just robbed a convenience store. that eric garner in new york was resisting arrest, that these were men who were asking for trouble. to that, you say what? >> they shouldn't be dead. one should not be met with death. one by chokehold, one by a gunshot, because michael brown shops lifted some sig reloze. eric g

marc morial saying recent events should shock the nation's conscience. >> yesterday's decision by theten island grand jury defied common sense. one can engage in lots of discussions about the law and discretion and standards, but the plain eyes of the world got an opportunity to see that interaction and now a man, a father of six, is dead. >> the attorney general of the united states, eric holder, says the justice department is investigating the circumstances of eric garner's death. today holder visits cleveland, ohio, it's part of his focus on trying to improve relations between law enforcement and the african-american communities across the country. also, new york, city police are in the process of retraining officers of the use of force. the department prohibits the chokehold used by officer daniel pantaleo. the officer faces an internal police investigation. once again the grand jury did not indict him. no violence, no vandalism. the new york police commissioner says protests over the grand jury decision have been mostly peaceful. our national correspondent jason carroll is joinin

with us today from philadelphia as he is generally on these jobs days, marc morial, much to talk about with the former mayor of new orleans. and at the new york stock exchange christy ceo of christy strategies. gentlemen, welcome back. >> good to see you. >> the stock market at a record high ron christy, unemployment down at a multi-year low. job growth over the past year as good as it has been since 1999. has this president been good for the economy or not? >> i don't think he has been. i think if you look overall african-american unemployment rate went up to over 11% now. you have 9.1 million people who are still looking for jobs. you have 18.1 million people who are either under employed and working part time. i think the market has responded well. i think the president has been good for wall street but not good for main street and the middle class. >> mayor morial i suspect you see it differently. >> this is what is so crucial on this. the dow is up. the unemployment rate is down. we've got this sustained period of job growth and also more jobs created this month than in any month

and we sat along with marc morial of the national urban league and others, saying how offended we were by it, but the offense was based on the context that hollywood has historically and now should our blacks from high positions of influence and power, there's not one black that can green light a movie in hollywood and green light distribution in their business practices. she was very, very open about where her e-mails were insensitive and wrong and pledged to work towards approaching a concrete way of using sony as a model to turn hollywood around from these practices of exclusion. the jury's out on what would happen. she seems sincere, but the proof is in the pudding, and even then, we'll wait to see when we eat it. i'm willing to work halfway with her and mr. morial to see, but we've got to turn this around and race is not a joking matter. but we must have serious, concrete change in hollywood. we'll be right back.
