marc siegel is here on that. good morning to you.. the title covid vaccines are safe for kids but we need to prioritize high-risk children. you agree with this decision. why? >> first of all, 17 members of the fda advisory committee voted yes. i spoke to several of them including two of them who and one more conservative. they all voted yes. why? the vaccine at that 1/3 dose looks to be 90% effective and safety excellent. some parents will say safety in 1600 kids. i want to see what it is in 100,000 kids and why my opinion. my opinion is let's give it to kids where we know -- this is a medical term and use it in the doctor's office all time, the word is cost-benefit analysis. what it means. i know a kid at high risk with an underlying condition, diabetes, cancer, i know they are much worse off with covid even though covid tends to affect kids more mildly. they are much more likely to be hospitalized if they have those conditions. they need the vaccine first. >> bill: the panel voted 17-0. based on a question whether or not they would

marc siegel joins us now. author of the book, which is what we need you right now to dig through the theater. take through the panic, dr. siegel, and i really ask a two-part question, but i will. is the omicron variant -- is that more contagious, and if contracted, is that more severe than the current strain? >> so, sandra, good afternoon. that is a question on everybody's mind. they are starting to be signs that this might have been here for a while. it didn't originate in south africa. they got caught with holding it, and they are being punished right now. they are feeling spotlighted with all of these travel bands. but meanwhile, the question is if it has been around a long time, it is less worrisome. i want to reassure people that is probably the case. but one of the reasons we can't prove that yet is it doesn't have enough genetic variation. as a virus because around for a while, you start seeing variation within the variation. we are not there yet because we have not sampled enough of them. the other is

marc siegel joins us with his reaction. good to see you. good morning, sir.ne? >> well, martha, that's exactly what the advisory committee of the fda was asking and answered it 17-0 thumbs up. i know a number of the people on that committee and admire them. their thumbs up is good enough to me. there is a variance within the committee what it means. the cdc will take this up this week. dr. cody meissner, the head of pediatric disease he voted thumbs up because he wants high-risk kids to get this. kids who are obese or kids with diabetes and chronic conditions. we've had 8600 hospitalizations among the 5 to 11 group in the united states. the vast majority of kids get a very mild case. but we can figure out who is more at risk for a higher risk for a severe case and he wants all of those kids to get vaccinated. i think he is right. i think that if you roll it out in that direction first you build up more and more safety data that's going to show that this is a very safe vaccine for the 5 to 11 group in millions of kids and then everybody should get it. one more

marc siegel joins us.ildren have died, thousands have been hospitalized. but weren't many of them vulnerable to start with, obese or suffered from chronic conditions? >> absolutely, stuart. over two-thirds of hospitalized children with covid-19 had pre-existing conditions like obesity, like diabetes, like, god forbid, cancer. all of those issues play a huge role in this, and i think the surgeon general is excellent, but i don't think he's right to go to the fear mongering here. that never works. fear to control never works. you don't these to be afraid of covid if you're a kid, because chances are you'll get a mild case, and you don't need to be afraid of the vaccine either because the vaccine has been given to over a million children. i think the idea is no coercion. talk to your pediatrician, talk to your parents and make a decision about how much covid is spreading. now, i am somewhat concerned about loss of smell and taste and maybe some confusion, you know, some brain fog that can occur after covid. t

marc siegel. good morning, dr. siegel. >> good morning, ainsley, great to be with you.ates? >> i think that both of these drugs, the one you mentioned, the merck drug and this one the pfizer drug is called paxlovid. i think we will see these drugs in early december. i would urge the fda to really kind of accelerate this and i tell you why. first of all, the united kingdom just approved the merck drug yesterday. that drug shows a decrease of 50% in hospitalizations and death. i'm more excited about the pfizer drug. i will tell you why. there is an enzyme and it is really magical to block it. what it does is takes a virus and helps it reassemble new viruses that then spread to other cells. we're ingenious enough to figure out how to block that virus that enzyme in hiv. and that treatment for hiv has changed the world inhibitors. now pfizer has got one for sars coc-2 for the coves here. if that works as well as advertised that's going to be the magical tamiflu type pill. i'm more excited about that we got to get the data and look at and it got to get these things approved
