abc's marcy gonzalez is covering all of it.morning, marcy. >> reporter: good morning, rob and diana. the hostage situation in midland city, alabama is over. such good news for the family wanting to have their little boy home in time for his 6th birthday. the tense, seven-day-long standoff in midland city, alabama now over. the 5-year-old boy taken hostage nearly a week ago now safe. >> i have visited with ethan. he is doing fine. he is laughing, joking, playing, eating. the things that you would expect a normal 5 to 6-year-old young man to do. >> reporter: fbi agents stormed the underground bunker where the little boy, known only as ethan was being held. a law enforcement source tells abc news authorities were able to put a high-tech camera into the bunker to monitor the boy and his captor, 65-year-old jimmy lee dykes. >> mr. dykes was observed, was observed holding a gun. at this point, fbi agents fearing the child was in imminent danger entered the bunker and rescued the child. >> reporter: but dykes is now dead. a source tel

joining us by phone is marcy reid.he's the president of national grid in massachusetts, utility that serves much of the state and she's at the emergency management center in north borough. good morning, marcy. >> good morning. >> to start with what can you tell us about the outage and is it going to get worse before it gets better? >> we do have 350,000 customers out here in our service territory in eastern massachusetts and down through rhode island. it's a very serious storm as you've been reporting, and it is still coming down. so we're just now getting to the point where we can start with some minimal restoration efforts. but by and large, we're going to still vt to hold off for a little bit. >> there's 650,000 people throughout the northeast corner not necessarily under your purview, but 650,000 without power. for those who are without power in the massachusetts area how long before they can expect things getting back to normal? >> well, you know rebecca, we told them coming into the storm that we expected this to

joining us now is congresswoman marcy kaptur, democrat of ohio and jared bernstein, a former economic policy adviser to vice president joe biden. he is also a cnbc and msnbc contributor. thank you both so much for being here. i'm sorry i made you sit through the alaska gun rights thing. >> it's fascinating. >> there is a lot going on that we aren't working on because we're working on this problem that we created for ourselves. jared, let me start with you. how it is only 6% of americans understand what is true about the deficit right now? >> i think it has to do a lot with all the noise that is trying to point there in the other direction. there are a lot of people in this town whose policy agenda, whose ideology really depends on everyone's hair being on fire about the budget deficit. because their ultimate goal is to cut government, to slash government, to get rid of social insurance. and if people actually are aware of the kind of numbers you just showed, the fact that the deficit has fallen by half as a share of gdp. they say we have a spending problem. i just looked at the number

marcy, do you think that it went beyond discomfort to a real danger for the people on board? >> we have heard some reports early on of food poisoning, but besides that, not a number of serious injuries. one person had to be taken from the ship while it was still in the gulf of mexico, taken by helicopter. we saw one person taken by ambulance soon after the ship docked. other than that, no reports of serious injury or illness. but i wonder if some of the passengers made threats of legal action as they got off the ship finally. >> i believe some would be considering it. that was not the first thing on their mind as they came off the ship. some of them krystal brown there were so happy to be home. absolute frustration with carnival cruise line. they are offering the passengers reimbursement, a free cruise, and $500. many of the passengers say that is simply not enough, considering all they went throughout. >> have the owners got any explanation as to not just by the fire broke out and why the engines were disabled about why it became such a total crisis on board? >> they have no
