here's abc's marci gonzalez. >> reporter: tonight, baby beckham ralph is home in indiana after a fight. not just for the preemie's life, but his family says, to get him released from the mexican hospital where he was born. >> it was health hostage -- hospital hostage. >> reporter: beckham's parents on vacation in cancun tuesday when mom michaela went into labor nearly 12 weeks before her due date. the family claims the hospital there refused to take her until they paid $3,000 upfront. and the family says the expenses kept piling up -- >> we want $4,000. we want $7,000. we want $8,000. >> reporter: charges for an emergency c-section and nicu care for little three-pound beckham, but also the family says, unexplainable fees including one for $4,000, just for the parents to see their son. >> we realized the gouging that was being done. >> reporter: the family says the hospital refused to take their health insurance and threatened to stop treating beckham, unless the bills totalling about $30,000 were paid out-of-pocket in full. >> they were threatening to put him literally on the streets,

here's abc's marci gonzalez. >> reporter: tonight, an army of firefighters battling the blazes scorching the west. >> and we looked over and half the mountain's on fire. >> reporter: flames inching towards homes north of sacramento. firefighters spraying the inferno with water. black smoke turning the day sky into night. in santa barbara county, this brush fire tripling in size today. plumes of smoke visible for miles, as flames race across hilltops. in california alone, more than 3,000 firefighters on the front lines -- in a battle on the ground and from the sky, up against dry, hot, gusty conditions. >> we thought we had a pretty good line on it, but the winds picked up. >> reporter: right now more than 40 large wildfires burning across the west. these aerials show fast-moving flames raging out of control in british columbia, thousands there forced to evacuate. and in arizona, this driver fleeing a thundercloud of smoke. a wildfire there destroying three homes. back here in california, hundreds of people under mandatory evacuation orders. some using sprinklers to try protect their home

abc's marci gonzalez starts us off. >> reporter: the flames tearing through the 26-floor of this high rise in honolulu and quickly spreading. >> that was like a horror movie. >> reporter: apartments engulfed. residents' chilling screams cutting through the roar of the inferno. >> i heard three women's voices screaming, pleading, moaning, please help me. >> reporter: those who could rushing out of the massive marco polo condominium complex. firefighters telling residents to shelter in place. helping others through the. blinding suffocating smoke through safety. >> so many smokes. >> reporter: residents watching in disbelief from a distance. the thick plumes visible from miles. >> horrendous. there was flames shooting out and black smoke. >> reporter: a dozen people injured and at least three people killed, found in two different units on the 26th floor. this 54-year-old called co-workers, saying he was hiding under a bed, unable to get his 58-year-old mother. neither making it out alive. >> i drove down there and basically watched his floor be consumed. >> reporter: fire investigators
