marco rubio has visited ohio and iowa since the election day. it is on. jenna: either you are to have a couple of diners that you could recommend if they are looking for referrals. there is so much talk about the future of the gop. we just talked about it with governor rick perry. as folks are turning focus to that, when you say when people ask, what is the future of the gop in this country? >> he lets it be known that he may make his aspirations known in june of this year. in the case of marco rubio and paul ryan, they talked at length about the challenges facing the nation and their party. ryan praised romney and spoke out against divisive politics as some soft rind distancing himself from the 47% remark. paul ryan mentioned poverty 15 times and says that the gop has to stick to conservative principles and appeal to more voters. >> the election didn't go our way. the republican party can't make excuses. we can't spend the next four years on the sidelines. instead, we must find new ways to apply a timeless principles to the challenges of the day. >> marc

marco rubio is honored tonight. paul ryan was the honoree last year. yes, andrea.re two guys without question are going to be in that 2016 presidential race barring some sort of unforeseen circumstance. they're both positioning themselves to lead the party. i'm interested to see what they talk about, because i think both of them -- paul ryan is talking about poverty. marco rubio is talking about education so not two typical what we would traditional republican issues, taxes and those sorts of things. this is an attempt by both men, i think, and a chance for both men to expand on what it means to be a member of the republican party and to try to broaden an appeal we saw in the 2012 election is just not broad enough particularly among hispanics. they are problems with women and young people. rubio is 41 and ryan is 42 years old who are leading a youth movement that the party hopes will change that appeal, correct their demographic problems and it starts even though the election is a month old, it starts today. >> i would put bobby jindal in that group as well. >> abs

marco rubio went on to win that primary and that senate seat. demint also backed rand paul in his primary. that was a fight, by the way, that took place in mcconnell's home state of kentucky and mcconnell endorsed the other guy. the not rand paul. but paul won. he won his senate race in kentucky which was deeply humiliating for mitch mcconnell. but demint has also backed a lot of candidates who won their primaries but did not go on to win their general elections. like christine "i am not a witch" o'donnell if you remember her. demint backed the not a witch candidate and she lost big time. he backed todd aiken of the legitimate rape comments and mourdock of the other rape comments. the reason jim demint isn't in the majority today is because of jim demint. but jim demint says he's okay with that. >> i'd rather have 30 republicans in the senate who believe in the principles of freedom than 60 who don't believe in anything. marco rubio. paul ryan.ans that are in the house and senate that have real strong conservative credentials endorsing a deal, that could provide a lot of cover to rank and file republicans. remember, marco rubio is sort of the star of the republican party. emerging star. he wants to run for president. a lot of people think he has a good chance to be the republican nominee. if he blesses a deal it does provide these guys cover on an issue, again, they ran from and ran against for so many years. so to their constituents it's going to be a flip-flop. and to a lot of conservatives an unpalatable flip-flop. >> i've talked to a number of immigration officials since the election. people who have been very involved in this fight. they think obviously the time is right for this because of the outcome of the election that you talked about and big disparity between republicans and democrats and the latino vote. former governor jeb bush says, quote, you quote him in your article saying republicans should actually strike
