marco rubio is on the rise. we are moving into the stage of the race where the candidates are conscious of it. the person who benefits by ben carson going down in the race is ted cruz who doesn't have much room to grow outside of carson coming down. trump is effective when he's fighting from his right to his left against these establishment candidates. you will see him tonight. two big departures from republican orthodoxy will challenge interests and you will hear him challenge the free trade deals. most of the establishment republicans on the stage, ardent free traders. trump will dekraai the trade deals, talk about repealing nafta. marco rubio tonight is in the middle of the action. these previous debates he's been like a supporting actor. really strong performances, got people's attention. but he comes into this and some degree the star of show. once again jeb bush's campaign is telegraphed the punches they will throw at marco rubio. in debates, like in boxing, most knock outs come on the counter punch. you s

immigration is a very tricky issue for both ted cruz and marco rubio, probably more rubio. has had a history vacillating, hesitating, equivocating responses to immigration reform. when he was in the house in florida, he proposed some elements of the dream act. and then when he ran for senate against charlie crist in florida, he just said, no. he just want to completely no immigration reform. but when he got into congress, he was a member, as you said, the gang of eight, proposing a path toward citizenship. well, the blowback from the tea party, which you must remember that his victory in 2010 was owed a great tilt of the tea party. and the blowback was tremendous. he backed off and he is not come near it since. it is very tricky for him for a bunch of reasons. if what he is advocating today or the law for his parents -- remember, his parents were not , they wouldost 1959 not be in this country. what he is proposing. it would be very different for his own family. hishis family narrative of hard-working struggling parents is really the central narrative of his campaign. the o

how about marco rubio? we say, keep hitting doubles. well, he probably had a home run moment in the last debate, when he and jeb bush squared off over his voting record in the senate. but the first debates have been solid performances each time from rubio, each time winning attention and winning notice from a few more republicans and a few more media people. you keep doing that and you end up with a good batting average. ted cruz, we say the key for him is to think before bouncing. what do we mean by that? he went after the moderators to great effect in that debate a couple weeks ago, but tonight this is the fox business network. a lot of republicans are more comfortable with shows that are on fox or on fox business. if ted cruz wants to replicate that moment and go after the moderators, maybe he should be careful, might get a different reception from republicans. and chris christie, one candidate who's not on the big sta stage tonight, chris christie did not have high enough polling numbers. carly fiorina went from the kid's table to t

the other person's marco rubio. h as he is not engaged in heavy contact with anybody at this point, is he a potential player, in your view? john: in his profile on paper, rubio has always looked like a potentially strong republican nominee. but you look at donald trump and marco rubio, try to put them in a ring together and say who is going to win that fight, it's hard for me to muster the conviction to say marco rubio going to win that battle. mark: when trump has said outrageous things and rubio has been asked about it, he laughs it off in a way that seems genuine. others try to laugh it off but it looks like acting. the staff said laugh it off. rubio actually laughs it off. i think there is a potential strength there. if the establishment turns to him i think he may not be rattled and may be able to make light of donald trump as a genuine player. john: all of these people are trying to appear like the candidate of strength on foreign policy. to republican voters by that? i just don't know if that's a sell he will

marco rubio comes off as a happy warrior. you know, he made a joke about his book and how it's on sale as a paperback. he made reference to his mother and how he's against anything that harms his mother. i think that gave people a lightness about him in a positive feeling about him as opposed to other candidates that are more like skulls. >> why is ted cruz someone to watch here not just based on debate performance but going forward? >> watch ted cruz. he's been shrewd in his strategy out there. he's deliberately contrasting himself in a subtle way with rubios, happy warrior thing. he's trying to channel conservative anger. he's being very specific in trying to tag evangelical voters. it's why you see him rising in the polls. you may end up with a race that pits a cruz against more of a rubio type candidate who is more of the big tent person. >> i think what we're seeing is that rubio and cruz seem to be the two candidates there that have a plan going forward. they have an idea of who they want to appeal to and how they want
