senator marco rubio joins me now.f the president and administration's response to this hurricane considering we just went through their lack of response when it came to hawaii? florida obviously knows how to handle these things with government assistance, obviously is all the better. how are things going? >> we would hope that hurricane recovery and things of this nature that is nonpartisan and encouraged the president had that response. we have a disaster relief fund inside of fema is very low. we knew that back in june. since june i've been trying to get money into it knowing we go into hurricane season and not knowing we would have fires in maui and so forth. they don't have enough money to do any of this and moving forward as we get into recovery when you add in the storm and the fire in maui. there are a bunch of previous storms when reimbursement to governments is one thing. they use the limited money they have to prioritize these storms. the one i hope they back off on. they've been saying we'll do disaster rel

earlier i spoke with lanhee chen, former adviser for marco rubio's presidential campaign, about what 2024. lanhee, great to have you back on bbc news. thank you forjoining us. so foreign policy played a surprisingly significant role in this republican debate. why do you think that is? well, i think there are very few areas of real contrast between these candidates on a number of different issues, but foreign policy is an area where you are seeing contrasts. for example, what the united states ought to do with respect to the ongoing conflict in ukraine, that is a major source of contention, and there are very real differences between, let's say, nikki haley and vivek ramaswamy, or donald trump, or even ron desantis. and the interesting thing here is you're seeing this divergence within the republican party where the top three polling contenders nationally right now, that would be trump, desantis and ramaswamy, have all embraced a point of view on the us—ukraine situation that is very much counter to what the traditional republican reagan view of this would be, and so i think it's a ve

and that is the same as marco rubio and trump back and forth on a tuesday.d that was a little late at that point. and you look at trump's greatest decisions here and his greatest liability was after the 2022 midterm elections. this is where you get into a problem. everyone thinks they can draft off of donald trump. but that is a crater -- i think to some extent, maybe i am playing into it but this may be a widespread smoke filling of the room where only trump and republicans and conservative elite got together and had a plan and acted in a concerted manner against him that you would see movement here. what we see now is a strange dynamic for the primary election or somebody wins a slight majority of the vote. and they have a candidate by more than 30 points not being attacked. and then i think it comes from a place of fear. the only candidates are the ones like chris christie who have nothing to lose. we are at a point where whether or not donald trump is there. and we need to try to convince voters that you are a viable alternative was not just trump but ot
