and i'm marcus washington. we'll have more local headlines for you in just a moment. but first we want to begin in southern california this morning. thousands of homes are still threatened by those flames of three large wildfires. the biggest palisades village and eaton fires so far. at least 24 lives we know have been lost. and that number is expected to rise. and at least 16 people have been reported missing. so far, more than 12,000 structures are estimated to have been damaged or destroyed. crews are working to gain ground as they brace for more dangerous conditions in the coming days. this is a look at where things stand. the palisades fire has burned nearly 24,000 acres, and it is still just 13% contained. now, containment jumped to 27% on the eden fire. it has burned more than 14,000 acres in altadena. also, an investigation is underway into whether southern california edison equipment played a role in starting the first fire. it's now 95% contained and has charred nearly 800 acres. the fire sparked last

marcus. laura, i have covered fires my entire career living in california, starting with the oakland hills fire, which all of your viewers, i'm sure are very familiar with. but i got to tell you, i have never seen winds sustained in the direction that they're going for this amount of time. it's been 24 hours and still you can see the flags around here. this wind is blowing this way towards the ocean, bringing the fire down the hill. and actually last night it jumped over pch, pacific coast highway. we're in the gladstones parking lot here. and you know the bay watch. a lifeguard stands were burned and some of the homes along pch this way were burned on the water side. so this is a fire of an intensity that we have not seen in a generation in, in this area. and just even living, you know, an hour from here in the valley, the winds were sustained overnight for so long that it was just unbelievable. they just didn't let up. and they aren't expected to let up until the weekend in any big way. so

and i'm marcus washington.et's get a look at what's happening across the bay area this morning as light rain starts to make fall ahead of a bigger system. we're expected to arrive this weekend. meteorologist kari hall, of course, beenonitoring all of that. so how soon are we talking about this rain coming? it's coming in as we speak. and it's waited so long as we take a look at the last time. we had a significant rainfall, january 3rd. and we've had to wait all the way until the 31st. now, this is significant because we were about to mark this month down as the third driest on record, and this is when we typically get much more rainfall than any other month throughout the year. finally, this atmospheric river is bringing some relief. with some wet weather now moving into the north bay and storm rangers tracking it with already some pockets of heavy rain moving from marin county to sonoma county on northward. as we've seen the rain starting a lot earlier for some of those areas, it will continue to pick up and t

marcus. all right. thanks, kari.s today, federal criminal charges may be announced against former oakland mayor sheng thao. that's according to multiple reports, including one in the chronicle, which cites sources saying that she and her boyfriend, andre jones are being indicted as part of the ongoing grand jury corruption probe. now, this all follows last summer's fbi raid to her home. that's when agents also raided the homes and businesses of a powerful east bay family, which owns california waste solutions. oakland's contracted recycler. she has not issued the mayor. the former mayor. that is a comment about this. but in the past, she has repeatedly denied wrongdoing. legal analyst stephen clark believes that there are reasons that this is taking so much time for the other shoe to drop. i think it involves more than just the former mayor, and so it was important that they took the time before you bring a case like this. these are serious allegations, and it's important that you successfully investigate these cases

. >> president joe biden has issued five more pardons, including a posthumous pardon to marcus garvey, the leader of the 1920s pan-african movement. can you tell us more about this pardon for marcus garvey, a figure that many americans may not know that much about? >> yeah. so marcus garvey was charged and targeted under a claim of mail fraud and then deported, i believe, to jamaica. >> and so the issue here was that with president biden's pardon, it recognizes that that charge may have been motivated by targeting, because marcus garvey led a movement that was based on pride and identity, pride in blackness, pride, and the challenge to a system that was full of racism and discrimination and preferred the coward posture of black people in this country. >> and so by leading that movement, he sparked a sense of pride. >> he stirred that up in black individuals, and that was something that prompted him to be targeted for this type of charge. now, when i think about marcus garvey and his legacy, i think president biden, through his his pardon today, recognize the impact of that, recognize

i'm marcus washington. back to you. all right, marcus, thank you. thousands of people in the bay area honored doctor martin luther king jr today, including those who took a special celebration train from san jose to san francisco. marianne favro joins us now from the diridon station in san jose. marianne, i understand you got to ride that train today. what was that like? i did. it was a very celebratory atmosphere. about a thousand people were on the train. most people caught it here in san jose shortly after 9 a.m. they also picked up passengers in san mateo and palo alto before getting to san francisco. what was nice to see is that there were families on board. there were grandparents on board, there were young children, a whole mix of people from throughout the community, and they were doing a lot of things like trivia contests, asking people if they could answer questions about doctor king's life. they also had a lot of music. people were dancing while the train was moving, and there was drumming as well. so it was a very lively atmosphere to ho

i'm marcus washington. back to you. thank you. marcus. we are going to go back to our wildfire coverage. the loss and destruction just unimaginable. hundreds of homes, thousands actually destroyed in southern california, including some celebrity homes. how they're responding to fires raging in southern california. this is the newest one. it broke out just before three this afternoon. it's about 50 acres. it's burning just north of 101 near calabasasas. overall, over 10,000 structures have burned in these wildfires in southern california, many of them homes. five people confirmed dead tens of thousands of people under evacuation orders. and we are getting word moments ago that a drawing a drone collided with a firefighting aircraft. it happened over the palisades fire today. fortunately, the aircraft landed safely. the faa is now investigating. we do not know who was operating that drone. the wildfires raging in southern california have been some of the most destructive in hollywood's biggest stars are among those who have lost their homes

i'm marcus washington. back to you, marcus. thanks. parents are now getting into the battle to save a south bay elementary school, named for a man many see as an american hero. today, parents joined kids and community members in a morning rally outside jason dahl elementary in san jose. they are demanding the school district take it off their potential closure list, arguing that not only would a closure create major hardship for students and parents, but would also tarnish the legacy of its namesake. nbc bay area's ian cull joins us now. and, ian, i understand jason dahl's family was actually there this morning. yeah, they were. and just to be clear, we're talking about the family of captain jason dahl, the pilot on united flight 93 that was taken over by terrorists on september 11th. today, members of his family joined parents for a rally before school. it's part of the franklin-mckinley school district and one of the schools the district has marked for potential closure to address a major budget deficit. the district says it may need

good morning to you, marcus. according to alameda county, last year, in 2024, there were over or close to 9500 people who were either living on the streets or in shelters. this new housing project behind me has only room for 18 unhoused families, people who are previously unhoused, which is obviously life changing for those people. and a small step, though, just in the direction of trying to fix this affordability crisis. behind me, this is crescent grove. it's a brand new affordable housing apartment complex that was just built here in castro valley by eaton housing, recently completed and now welcoming new residents. this is a 72 unit affordable housing development. it's a mix of studio and 1 to 3 bedroom units are located near ruby street and crescent avenue. again here in castro valley. 18 of those units will be given to unhoused families, 15 will be given to veterans, and ten will be given to people with intellectual disabilities. i'll be through a voucher program and in the remaining units will be filled vi
