eyewitness news reporter marcus solis joins us live with more. marcus? >> reporter: and sade, you'll recall that in the heart of the outbreak, five cooling towers tested positive for legionella but the city believed that one was likely to blame for the source of the outbreak and today they have identified that smoking gun they say. >> i'm happy to declare that the outbreak is over. >> reporter: and with that, the city closed the book on a deadly public health crisis. today officials declared that the water cooling tower atop the opera house hotel was the cause of the legionnaire's disease outbreak. even though other towers throughout the bronx tested positive, analysis obviously samples from patients who were sickened matched only the strain at the hotel. >> we now no that for every one of the -- now know that for every one of the samples, there's a match with a strain found at the opera house hotel. [ sirens ] >> reporter: in all, 128 cases were reported. 12 people died. victims who had underlying health issues. the first cases were reported july 10th.

marcus solis is at that hotel with the latest. marcus? >> reporter: from are the beginning, city health officials said it was likely to be one single source for the outbreak and now they say scientific testing proved them right. they say that the cooling tower at the opera house hotel on east 149th street has been identified as the culprit, the source of the outbreak that killed 10%, 12 fatalities. the tower was disinfected august 1st. no new cases since august 3rd. today the health department did declare the outbreak over. scientists tested samples from 25 patients, some who died. samples from the legionella bacteria was taken from the cooling tower. it was a painstaking process that took time because cultures needed to grow but the results came back the same at different laboratories so the city finally has its smoking gun. >> after rigorous testing, verification and agreement at all three laboratories, we know that for everyone of the samples for which testing is now complete, there is a match with the strain found at the opera house h

. >> marcus solis is live with the latest on this one. marcus? >> reporter: shirleen and dave, the state health commissioner invited by the borough president calls it an all hands they toured the area. take a look at the cooling tower, one of these identified legionella. dr. howard zucker joined reuben diaz as they came to this neighborhood, one of four throughout the bronx that has been affected. this cooling tower is one of five tested positive but it is not definitively linked as the source of the outbreak. the numbers have continued to grow since the first reported cases on july 10th. eight people died. 89 others sickened. the borough president proposed legislation for city inspection of cooling towers throughout the city. but that would help outbreaks in the future. as for what is happening now, he is asking for help. >> to not only continue to identify cooling systems and cooling towers in the area but also to do testing in areas outside of the area where we have seen this large cluster of individuals sick and where people have died. >> rep

eyewitness news reporter marcus solis posting this picture on the long lines on his twitter page and joining us now from norwalk with the story. marcus? >> reporter: well, dave and liz, the doors to the dmv closed at 4:00. but inside, there's still dozens of people close to 100 people. they were here at 4:00 when it closed so they will -- the office will stay open until the transactions are completed. now officials had predicted long lines today. but this might have exceeded their worst fears and agonizingly slow process that's playing out statewide. now the reason for all of this connecticut's dmv branches partially shut down last week in order to upgrade their computer systems. ironically the more services available online, things that could spare drivers a the dmv but there are certain things can only be done in person. and so today on the first day back, people came in droves and had to wait. we spoke with some people who spent six, seven hours here. registering vehicles seems to be the slowest transaction. the one that caused monumental delays and frustration. >> i got here, i wa

marcus solis is in the melrose section with much more. marcus? >> dave and shirleen, information is power. emergency management is trying to do its best to inform bronx residents about any ongoing concerns they have about the recent legionnaires outbreak. oem calls it mobile office hours, going out into the community to answer questions. over the last month 12 people died from legionnaires, the history. the city identified five cooling towers as the likely source of the outbreak. over a dozen other towers tested positive for legionella, the bacteria that causes the respiratory sickness. this set up by the oem out here today is designed to address emergency prepared necessary of all forms, what to do in hurricanes, water main breaks. but given what is happening in the bronx, the focus today is legionnaires. >> it's affecting people in the south bronx. we have a doctor, we have an rn from a volunteer program called medical reserve court run by the department of health and we have a public affairs person from the department of health as well who can
