so here's marcus washington with more.ll, may is mental health awareness month and a new multi-state initiative is aiming to help our kids struggling in middle and high school. the schultz family foundation, along with pinterest and americorps. they've teamed up with 11 states, including california, to create a new youth mental health corps. now this is going to help kids with mental health issues get support, which is lacking in many parts of the country. now, we do know that locally, there's a shortage of mental health providers who actually can afford the bay area and insurance coverage is usually not long enough to help people get better. last year, a mental health america study found that almost 60% of young americans with major depression did not receive any mental health treatment, and that's badly needed. the cdc study found that suicide rate among young americans increased more than 60. this is between 2007 and 2021. the new youth mental health corps would deploy specially trained 18 to 24 year old men and women t

so here's today in the bay's marcus washington to explain. well, hackers are targeting our water utilities, so much now that the federal government is urging our local water suppliers to take immediate action to protect this precious resource. the epa releasing this warning earlier this month. this is after it found about 70% of the utilities inspected over the past year violated the standard meant to prevent cyber attacks. a cybersecurity expert we spoke with says china, russia, syria and iran are the main culprits behind these breaches and intrusions. a part of the problem is most water systems now rely on digital technology as they're no longer, you know, manual systems that used to be used a long time ago. so now that they're digital, if you think about a hacker, they can do things like change a parameter on the system, change the way the water is ingested, change the chemicals that are used. so the impact can be everything from just shut the water down completely all the way to contaminate it. and that's not great for the people that act

i'm marcus washington. back to you. marcus. thank you.ne of the largest teachers union in the united states comes to a reported agreement with governor newsom. we agree that we can't go back to where we were. tell lawmakers and governor newsom to pass a state budget that protects public schools for our students and communities. this is a big deal here. that was part of an ad released by the california teachers association. it blasted what it described as billions of dollars in cuts to school spending. politico is now reporting the governor has reached a deal with the union. the previous plan would have lowered the amount of money guaranteed to schools by nearly $12 billion. the reported new deal includes a guaranteed $5.5 billion to schools in the future. the governor is trying to close a $38 billion budget shortfall. well, starbucks and the union that represents its stores are set to resume negotiations this week. and members of that union say they're optimistic about the talks. last month, starbucks and the workers union united union me

i'm ginger conejero saab in for laura garcia and i'm marcus washington. we want to take a look at the forecast coming up for you in a bit with meteorologist kari hall. but first, want to check in with mike inouye because, mike, you're tracking a big traffic alert for folks down in the south bay. that's right. highway 101 is shut down right now as you travel north from mountain view and in through palo alto, just north of san antonio. we've had a deadly crash. northbound 101 had a crash at about 3:00 in the morning. the situation evolved from a single vehicle on the right shoulder and into a light pole to another big rig on scene. and then they noticed two more vehicles. they've closed down the northbound side. the coroner was called at 4:00, typically, it takes about 90 minutes at this time of day for the coroner to arrive on scene, so i'll watch the progress. but if you're traveling north out of mountain view, avoid 101. use el camino real. you can use bayshore road, which is along a frontage road here, or you can use 280 to get past the entire area. bac

i'm laura garcia and i'm marcus washington.ith that breaking news this morning for you. that overturned big rig causing traffic backups in the south bay today in the bay's bob redell live for us in san jose. so, bob, you're at 880, where it meets 101. correct. so we're talking about northbound, 101 to the southbound 880 connector shut down because of this overturned big rig. and in the connector right next to it, which would be northbound 880 to northbound 101, also shut down. this big rig overturned overnight. just spoke with caltrans. it's loaded with about 40,000 pounds of strawberries. they were going to try to upright the trailer, but it was just too much weight. so what they're doing right now is they're offloading the strawberries and caltrans just indicated sadly, they're just gonna have to. they're dumping the strawberries. i guess they're probably just not, sellable anymore. since this truck overturned, the driver of the truck is still on scene. he's okay. this solo vehicle accident, chp indicates they might have been

i'm marcus washington, i'm laura garcia. we're going to start out with traffic this morning, because mike has been following some breaking news that certainly impacting the morning commute huge impact the nimitz as you travel through hayward really jammed up two separate crashes we've learned involving six vehicles total. but two of those vehicles reportedly on fire. now the good news i got word there are no major injuries . major impact to the traffic, though for a short period of time, we had all southbound lanes blocked. just about whipple, just past there. so alvarado-niles, let's talk about that. if you enter the freeway south of alvarado-niles into union city and fremont, you're okay heading south. if you're north of there, things will jam up as you approach 92 with the build coming off the castro valley. y hyperion is a big surface street transitioning onto union city boulevard, but you see that a lot of traffic is heading across that san mateo bridge carry. that's more slowdown than we typically see at this time of m

i'm ginger conejero saab in for laura garcia, and i'm marcus washington. we'll get to that forecast for you in just a second. but first, mike noho has been tracking some breaking news along the peninsula. that deadly accident this morning, mike. that's right, folks, a northbound 101 really jammed up. we have our photographer looking south. so coming toward us is northbound 101 still down to just one lane. you see how those cones quickly funnel you over to just one lane, instead of the five that you normally would see traveling north around san antonio. that's the exit you see over on this side. the onramp is blocked. no access to north 101 at san antonio. as we look at the maps and we saw the progress there with the flatbed tow truck, you see, it's jammed up from about shoreline. if you get over to bayshore road, that will take you past the scene. same thing for middlefield, el camino, or 280, which keeps you completely clear that one section of the peninsula continues to be jammed up for shoreline down to san antonio road north of there. everything's okay

on this tuesday, i'm marcus washington and i'm laura garcia. we're going to check in with mike for that morning commute in just a bit. but first let's get a look at the forecast. meteorologist kari hall is tracking what we can expect. yes. today, the warmest day of the week. this is what we are going to see as we get started this morning. as we take a live look at oakland, our temperatures go from mid 50s at 8:00 and a few clouds to all clear the rest of the day, and warming temperatures. now here in oakland we're going to see temperatures in the 70s up to 78 degrees 80 in fremont and 82 in san jose. so even though this is the warmest day of the week, the temperatures really aren't all that extreme. we are going to see mostly upper 70s and low 80s for the valleys. we're up to 82. in novato today, and we'll talk about a cool down for the rest of the week in the forecast. that's coming up in a few minutes. and mike, now you have a the start with the drive out of the north bay or into the north bay. yes, right here, the tunnel here, the robin will

i'm marcus washington and i'm laura garcia. we'll check in with mike in the morning, commute in just a little bit. first. want to enjoy the forecast for today? another nice one. a little warmer a little warmer for some spots. and mainly that's the usual spots that heat up a little bit more than the coastline. so we're going to have a temperatures peaking today in the low 80s. not too bad. but then tomorrow the winds will start to pick up and then it gets quite a bit cooler as we lead into our holiday weekend. take a look at our highs for today and what our normal high temperature is for this date. in santa rosa, we're looking at a high of 84. now. usually we're seeing a high of 76. and in concord 86 degrees there. when we're used to seeing upper 70s. so once again it is a little bit above average but not setting any records here. san jose looking at a high today of 82 degrees. we'll talk about the rest of the week. coming up, mike, you're tracking the wait at the bay bridge yeah, things kicked in pretty quickly on this tuesday.

i'm marcus washington, and i'm kris sanchez. i'm here for laura garcia, who is off. first, we want to start with developing news. the oakland fire department is still on the scene of a large lumber yard fire just off 880. and you can see how massive those flames got last night. obviously a very different scene this morning. and that's where we find today in the bay's bob redell. and bob, do we have an update on what the cause is of this fire? there is a man who works at a gas station next door. the economy lumber that burned here on high street. marcus and kris. and he says recently he's seen a number of fires started in this area by unhoused people. but oakland fire department, they have cast doubt on that as being the cause for what this fire was yesterday. you could see the cause still under investigation. fire is contained, but the firefighters are still been pouring water on and off this morning onto the structure to make sure that nothing flares back up. you can see it is smoldering. still, now that we're getting the sun up, this is what the fire looked like la

on this wednesday, i'm marcus washington and i'm laura garcia. so let's get straight to that breaking news. mike inouye has details on that major sig alert in the south bay. this overture and big rig. yeah. you guys showed those pictures and it's pretty much the same thing right at this moment. what's not the same as the backup? it's starting to build as we talked about. this is first where we'll see the slowing typically not for another few minutes, but that connector is closed from north 101 onto north 880. by that overturned truck carrying potentially 40,000 pounds of fruit, and also a damage to about ten sand barrels. from what i saw as it hit along the side of the roadway on that connector. so that's closed right now, oakland road, typically a funnel point where we would see some slowing northbound, and we're seeing surface streets see more traffic in the area. folks coming to the freeway can't get on to get into the backups. and that is a problem already for the morning commute. typically, we see that slowdown happening about here and then

i'm marcus washington and i'm laura garcia. we're going to check the morning commute with mike in just a little bit. but let's see if there's any gloom out there this morning. yeah start out cloudy again. it's missing and drizzling in san francisco. you can see it on the camera lens there as the temperature is now at 55 degrees. as you move away from the coastline, it's still cloudy. we all see that marine layer pushing across the bay area, which will cause our temperatures to warm up a lot more slowly. today and give us a nice and mild afternoon even after it clears. so right now we're at 52, in san rafael. it is 58 in san jose and 55 in san francisco. and we're going to see our trend warming up slowly because of the gradual clearing of the sky, and will be at 71 in san jose eventually headed for 77 degrees and 75 in dublin. fremont, also 75 and 68, in san mateo. we'll talk about the weekend coming up in a few minutes. and, mike, you have a freeway closure right now. yeah. or at least that's the latest report from chp. they sa

i'm kris sanchez, and i'm marcus washington. let's get right to that breaking news today in the bay's ginger conejero saab. she's live for us at regency regional medical center. this is where one of those officers is fighting for their life. now. bob redell is live at the scene where the shots were fired. bob, have you learned anything about what happened before this? we know that san jose police were responding to a disturbance here at the extended stay america. behind me, here on san ignacio avenue. this was around 1030 last night. this is something that the police department has put out on social media, and we are expecting to hopefully get more information from them during our news conference later today. but as they were responding to this disturbance, there was a man they made contact with. and according to police, this man shot two police officers. officers returned fire and they hit that man. the two officers were taken to the hospital. fortunately, one has been released. ginger will have an update on that. the suspect a

thanks for joining us for our midday newscast i'm marcus washington. well, today google is hosting its i o developers conference. and as thousands of people arrive at shoreline amphitheater for that event, protesters are planning to take advantage of the visibility. nbc bay area's kris sanchez joining us live from mountain view this midday with the pro-palestinian protests. chris well, hi there, marcus. i want to show you here behind me, this is the main gate to get into a shoreline amphitheater where the google i o developers conference is happening. you see all those folks standing around. that's because these protesters succeeded in shutting this main gate down. people had to turn around and go into another entrance about a quarter mile down the road. so clearly there was a disruption to the top of this event. these protesters were chanting, no tech for genocide. they are against the use of ai and cloud computing technology by google and their contract with the israeli government and the israeli military. they used a lot of the imagery that we know

i'm marcus washington and i'm laura garcia. we begin with that breaking news. our ginger conejero saab was inside the courtroom as the judge made his decision against david depape. she joins us live outside right now. and ginger, this marks the end of a year and a half court battle for his federal case. that is correct. laura and marcus. and this all happened literally just moments ago, probably within the last 15 or maybe even ten minutes ago. the judge handed down his sentence for david depape, the man who is convicted of attacking paul pelosi. she handed down the sentence of 30 years in prison. now there are two counts that david depape was charged with in this federal case. one is for attempted kidnaping that the judge gave him a 20 year sentence. and there's a second count that was an assault on a family member of a federal official. he was sentenced to 30 years on that count. now, both of those sentences will be served concurrently, which is why he will serve 30 years in prison. a big question for the judge this morning was how will david depapes mental s

i'm marcus washington. well, hours later and it is still a big mess for road crews in the south bay. a big rig overturned on a critical connector ramp and the impact for drivers stretching for hours at this point. our team coverage on the traffic situation begins right now. we want to kick things off with nbc bay area's bob redell. he's there live at the scene. and bob, we know this has to be a well coordinated cleanup there. so how are things looking? well, chp had tweeted out that they would be reopening this connector from 101 to 880 right now at 11 a.m, but i just spoke with caltrans and they're coordinating this cleanup of all these strawberries that were on the big rig. and then the damage to the road, the supervisor is telling me it could be another 60 to 90 minutes. so the area we're talking about is northbound 101 connector to northbound 880. and then the northbound 880 connector to northbound 101. those are the areas that are shut down right now. the actual 101, i don't want to say the 101, becaus

i'm laura garcia and i'm marcus washington. we'll get to that deadly shooting just a moment. but first, new at 11. a judge in san francisco rules the sentencing for paul pelosis attacker. david depape, will stand at 30 years in prison. this comes after he was given the opportunity to speak in court following his guilty verdict. we, in fact, have a live look outside the federal courthouse in san francisco. the new developments just coming down within the past hour. while in court, depape spoke for about five minutes. he apologized for his actions and says he recently reconnected with family in canada for today's hearing was held because a judge never allowed depape the opportunity to speak when he was sentenced earlier this month. the duration of that sentence did not change. meanwhile, opening statements are expected to begin tomorrow into perhaps state trial. jurors were sworn in last friday, but his attorneys are arguing that the state's charges should be dismissed, citing double jeopardy following his federal conviction. new at 11 the search is on for an inmate with a viol
