abc's marci gonzalez starts us off. >> reporter: flames tearing off this balcony, whipping this 26 floor of this high rise in honolulu. >> that was like a horror movie. >> reporter: apartments engulfed. residents' chilling screams cutting through the roar of the inferno. >> i heard three women's voices screaming, pleading, moaning, please help me. >> reporter: those who could rushing out of the massive marco polo condominium complex. firefighters telling residents to shelter in place. helping others through the blinding, suffocating smoke to safety. >> so many smokes. >> reporter: residents watching in disbelief from a distance. the thick plumes visible from miles. >> horrendous. there was flames shooting out and black smoke. >> reporter: a dozen people injured and at least three people killed, found in two different units on the 26th floor. this 54-year-old called co-workers at hawaiian airlines soon after the fire began, saying he was hiding under a bed, unable to get his mother. neither making it out alive. >> i drove down there and basically watched his floor be consumed. >> reporter

good morning to you, marci. >> reporter: good morning, paula and dan. yeah, one of them was an off-duty firefighter who happened to be right there not far from this airport when the plane crashed. the pilot taking off from here at the start of this busy holiday travel weekend and realizing within moments that something was seriously wrong. this startling video capturing that small plane plummeting from the sky bursting into flames on a busy southern california freeway. the problems beginning just 43 seconds after the pilot was cleared for takeoff. >> hey, we got a mayday. we got a mayday. 297, mayday, mayday. try and make it back to the airport. we're trying to get altitude. i lost my right engine. >> reporter: the twin engine cessna skimming past the traffic below incredibly clipping only one vehicle. >> rear ended my truck. spun around. had a passenger in there. saw flames all around us. >> reporter: those flames exploding on the packed 405 freeway sending plumes of black smoke into the air. >> it's a plane. holy [ bleep ]. it's a plane. >> reporter:
