promises the diplomats will return to libya once the security situation allows for it. >> axelrod: margaret brennan with a very busy day on the diplomatic beat. thank you, margaret. now to the recovery operation and the crash of malaysia airlines flight 17. two australian air force planes carrying the remains of 38 crash victims arrived today at a military airfield in the netherlands where they were met by an honor guard. the last of the bodies that have been recovered from the site. 12 of the 298 victims were from australia. the violence in eastern ukraine is keeping investigators away from the crash scene. even so, there is word tonight of what the plane's black boxes are revealing. charlie d'agata is in the region tonight. >> reporter: the black boxes that were handed over intact from malaysia airlines flight 17 have begun to provide vital clues of what brought the aircraft down, killing all 298 people on board. a european investigator told cbs news today that unreleased data shows massive explosive decompression. that's consistent with the plane's fuselage having been penetrated multiple times

the growing number of civilian casualties as israeli's ground invasion advances. >> pelley: margaret brennan traveling with the secretary. margaret. thank you. in our other major story tonight, many of the 298 dead from the shootdown of malaysia airlines flight 17 are being prepared now for a flight back to the netherlands. they were carried out of a rebel-held area in ukraine today, but mark phillips reports, when the train arrived, there was a surprise. >> reporter: a woeful whistle and another stop on the slow journey home, and more bad news. as the the train carryqing the bodies of the crash victims crawled into government-controlled ukraine, it became clear that it was not carrying as many of the victims as grieving families had been told. as many as 100 have been left behind. malaysian investigators who arrived at the crash scene discovered what that stench that hangs over the place meant-- there are still human remains here. michael borciurkiw of the europe security agency, the o.s.c.e.. >> we're told there are about 290 bodies on that train. we could not independently verify that. b

margaret brennan on the banks of the nile. thank you, margaret. with battles raging overseas, president obama shuttled among fund raisers here at home, two of them today. he has his eye on a battle three months away, the midterm elections, and with the possibility of democrats losing the senate, the party needs money right now, but is now the best time to be on the road? here's major garrett. >> reporter: president obama arrived late today in los angeles for his fifth meeting with big donors in two days. white house press secretary josh earnest says this fund-raising swing has not distracted the president from crises at home and abroad. could you address what many americans believe is either thativial or unnecessarily distracting obligations of presidents, including this one, to raise money in the course of conducting important matters of state? >> my suggested standard would be whether or not those political activities interfere with the president's constitutional responsibilities as the commander in chief of the united states of america. >> repo

margaret brennan, state department correspondent, has been talking with her witnesses all day. margaret? margaret brennan since the beginning of the conflict six months ago, both sides have accused one another of causing the tension. but the obama administration says there is clear evidence russia is providing the separatists with military support, actions it has warned could have fatal consequences. moments after the tragedy, ukraine's president petro poroshenko said it was not an accident but an act of terrorism. ukraine's government said the airliner had been shot down by a missile and claimed there was evidence of russian military involvement. then pointed to comments made on twitter by separatist leader igor girkin who earlier took credit for shooting down a military aircraft. he warned, do not fly in our skies. later ukraine security agency released recordings of what it claimed were intercepted phone calls between a russian intelligence officer and separatist leader in ukraine. we couldn't verify the recording but a voice is heard saying -- we have just shot down a plane.

margaret brennan has the details. >> secretary kerry plans to go to kabul friday to meet with both the candidates, abdullah abdullah and ashraf ghani. he is calling for a full investigation of what the u.s. believes to be substantial election fraud. it is highly unusual for the u.s. to intervene in a foreign election, but the obama administration is concerned a standoff could lead to violence, especially as most u.s. troops withdraw. a split government, though, could trigger a cutoff in aid from the u.s., money that is needed to pay the afghan military and police. the white house is also counting on the new president -- whoever that is -- to agree to allow around 9,000 u.s. troops to remain in the country after 2014. >> pelley: margaret brennan at the state department, thank you. today, attorney general eric holder said syria's civil war has turned the middle east into a cradle of violent extremism. in a speech to diplomats in norway, european nations were called on to adopt the u.s. anti-terrorist strategy to prevent terrorists from traveling to the war zone. >> if we wait for nations

. >> axelrod: margaret brennan is our state department correspondent. she's traveling with secretary kerry and joins us now from paris. margaret, after a week of intense negotiations, where do things stand right now in terms of a long-term diplomatic solution? >> reporter: jim, kerry is returning to washington without a cease-fire and no immediate plans to return to the middle east. he says a broader framework is in place for when both sides are willing to stop firing at one another. but after meetings with the turkish and qatari foreign ministers negotiating on behalf of hamas, both said they would be willing for more pauses in fighting but no clear pledges for anyone than these temporary halts at this point. hamas is very skeptical because they've seen past cease-fires fall apart, promises of allowing more freedom of movement for palestinians were not followed through on. israel, for its part, rejected that offer of a seven-day truce in part because it said it's not done with its military operation. they want to blow up more of those tunnels they accus

margaret brennan is joining us here in new york. margaret what are you hearing? >> scott, i've been e-mailing with some sources, some u.s. officials who say it is actually too early to tell. they are looking at what the ukrainian interior minister and his adviser have said they blame the foot at the separatist groups for shooting down this aircraft. u.s. officials are looking at that looking at the reports, saying it is too early to say if the information is accurate at this time. they have been very carefully tracking the type of hardware that the u.s. government believes that russia has given to some of these separatist groups these pro russian separatist groups that has included some surface to air missiles heavier hardware there that the u.s. blames russia for handing over to these groups. but it is not believed to be ukrainian, military hardware. this is being blamed on some of the pro russian groups u.s. can't verify that yet. >> we also have on the telephone our aviation expert sully sullenberger former u.s. air ways pilot who famously landed his aircraft

i'm margaret brennan in new york.n ukraine, near the border with russia. malaysian air flight 17 was en route from amsterdam to kuala lumpur with 295 people on board. we're just getting many of these details. our bob orr has been watching the situation from washington. let's go to him now. bob, what do we know? >> margaret, just a moment ago, malaysia airlines confirmed it lost contact with the plane, which we believe to be a boeing 777 200, a long range airplane exactly like the one that disappeared several months ago coming out of kuala lumpur. our best information is that this is a flight that took off from amsterdam. we believe it to be malaysian airlines flight 17 with as you said 280 passengers a crew of 15. it was en route to southeast asia when it got over ukrainian air space. that's when radar lost track of the airplane. on top of that we see now reports from the ground some pictures of a column of smoke rising near the russian border in eastern ukraine. the kind of picture that would be consistent with a pla

margaret brennan is in cairo where secretary of state john kerry is trying to convince hamas to accept cease-fire. margaret, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, secretary kerry is here to build on an egyptian proposal to force a cease-fire between the israelis and hamas. but american diplomats say this is going to be very difficult, in part, because the fighting is so much more severe than during the last flare-up in 2012. this time, it's not clear whether any arab state can get hamas to stop firing. and egypt's new president has very limited sway over its fighters. he does, however, control the border with gaza. and opening it up is a key demand being made by hamas. kerry is speaking to al sisi about that right now. the administration is very concerned about the high number of casualties. overnight pledged $47 million to aid the 80,000 palestinians in gaza that the u.n. says are now seeking shelter. but, charlie and norah, as hard won as any possible cease-fire would be, american diplomats are not going to stop there. kerry says he believes a broader peace is necessary to end thi

margaret brennan is here. good morning. >> good to be back with you, charlie. >>> we begin here, many of you in washington and out in arizona are facing exceptionally warm weather today. meanwhile, parts of the midwest are cleaning up from a series of thunderstorms called a derecho. at least one person is dead. >> chicago's tallest building was hit repeatedly by lightning. wbbm near o'hare airport, which is still under a flood warning. >> reporter: good morning. storms have caused all sorts of problems including the scene we're witnessing right now. this is the main artery to o'hare international airport. one of the busiest airports in the nation. flooding has reduced access to the airport to just one lane creating a one-mile backup. a series of lightning strikes took direct aim at chicago's willis tower. darkening skies led to driving rain. floodwaters brought traffic to a halt at chicago's o'hare international airport. it's part of a weather system known as a derecho. national weather service label this had
