our cnn's contributor john avalon and margaret hoover are with me. first my question is, is there any reason to think this new batch is going to be any different than the old batch? >> yes, there is. >> i'm so glad. >> this is a historically diverse house of representatives, unprecedented numbers of women, six openly gale members of the house of representatives two females vets who have been in battle, combat vets from the iraq war and afghanistan. just an extraordinary amount of diversity. the problem from a republicans' perspective is all that have diversity is on the democrat ecside. so the house looks different. what you're hearing is a lot of them came to washington this time, because they were told they want a congress that can work together. they were elected among historically low approval ratings in the house of representatives and they know their job is to get something done. there's a new coalition of democrats, maybe 55 of them, 14 blue dogs left so hopefully democrats who aren't super-liberal who also want to compromise. >>> first breaki

it is gloria borger, and cornell belcher, and political contributor and republican consultant margaret hoover. gloria, let me start with you. what is so different this time around for the republicans? simply the reality of november's election? >> yeah, they are worried about their own survival as a political party. one way to survive as a party is to broaden your base and not remain hostage to a single part of it. and i think that has been the problem for the republican party when you talk about john mccain. when john mccain was challenged from the right in 2010, when he was running for re-election to the senate, he became much more conservative on immigration policy. now i think he's sort of unshackled and he's back to the position he was in in 2005 and 2007. i mean, you know, i spent a lot of time with him on that straight talk express when he was running for the presidency in 2007. and i remember him telling me that he was stunned at the vitriolic reaction within his own party to immigration. now it's about survival. so that's why you see them getting together with the democrats. >> cornel

margaret hoover joins us, also here in new york, charles blow. when you look at this, the idea that the border has to be secure for legislation before some sort of pathway to citizenship, is that all that much different to what republicans said all along? >> by making it a priority on the front end and saying this stipulation has to be met first -- >> but how do you define a secure border? does that mean no one getting across? >> you can look at places where it has been successful. nogales, that example, maybe not so successful. yuma, border crossings dropped 95%. there are places where you have successfully secured the borders, a precipitous drop in border cross also. you can say that's a reasonable measure of border security. this is the devil's in the details. these are a set of principles these senators have agreed on, but we haven't seen what it's going to look like. the devil's in the details. that could be a major sticking point for republicans on the right flank, hopefully with people like jeff flake and marco rubio and people who have th

and cnn contributor and republican consultant margaret hoover. margaret, let me start with you.hose are fighting words from governor christie. should he be commended for putting his people's needs really ahead of party politics, if you will? >> sure, he should. but he's also a governor of a state that's struggling and hurting. i mean, they're down and out right now, and christie has been lauded for being that guy since the election. of course, a lot of republicans really despised him for doing what he did during the election. many still blame him for mitt romney's loss, which i think is absurd. but this is christie's job. this is what he does. he's a tough talker and he's fighting for his state. look, i'm really sympathetic to where christie's coming from. i think we all are. it's not like john boehner hasn't had anything else to do in the last few days. and what i'm hearing from house republicans is boehner's juice is gone. he didn't even necessarily have the votes to get another spending bill through his own house. and so he basically ended up lying and deceiving house republi
