joining us to discuss margaret talev and paul kaine columnist for the "washington post."ood to see you both this morning. paul, i was struck by your piece overnight where you point out -- and i think this is a really important discussion we have been having -- there's been so much given away by kevin mccarthy, what's left here? french hill told jim yesterday there's been a lot of give and take. do you see any take tore kevin mccarthy? it seems like nothing but give. >> yeah, that's the troubling factor for mccarthy is he has given away a lot of concessions already to these sort of the radical right and he has yet to show anything -- show any gains in terms of those 20 to 21 who are opposing him right now. so he's giving away a lot. there are obscure rules changes that mostly reviewers don't want me hear me go into but they are really important in terms of the functioning of congress. he could end up getting there. he still might get the votes to become speaker, but he might be just completely dis embodying the power of the office in order to get there so that he might rea

joining us now to discuss, heidi przybyla, national correspondent for politico and margaret talev. as we look at the changes that are coming to the biden white house here, jeff zions moving over to be chief of staff, how, if at all, do you see this changing the white house response to this ongoing documents issue? >> well, i think that they have been -- they were preparing to be investigated anyhow, including this sort of special internal white house lawyer structure. that's going to continue apace. i don't think they knew that this was going to be the investigation. but look, jeff zioents. there's all kinds of different chiefs of staffs over the years, some are very political and heavy-handed. jeff zients is in a different category. he's a management consultant, very successful, self-made one at that. and he's known for being well organized and handling complex operations. so i think one of his first big tests will be his handling of this investigation. but there's something else to focus on with jeff zients. and that is his experience with the economy and with budgeting. all the

back with me now kevin madden, nayyera haq and margaret talev. it's not an enticing job.a lot of work. it's probably not particularly gratifying, although the speaker adds you're linked in just fine. however, kevin mccarthy is up against not just 19 people or 20 people at this point. it's a so-called five families happening right now. and cnn was reporting that there are these, quote, five families in the gop that mccarthy has had to be in talks with. you have different ideologies. you have the republican study committee, problem sovrks freedom caucus, gop governance group. there are probably some more. it's not as if the democrats don't have their own spectrum want their party. but just look at that, kevin, and think about what he sort of up against to try to play indicate, to give concessions to. it's a losing battle. >> well, it's not new. and that's one of the things about the house of representatives is the managing minority factions within your conference or caucus is not a new thing. it's part of the job. i think the real problem here is since 2016, since the ascen

. >>> with us now is margaret talev senior contributor for axios and michael moore former u.s. nd partner at moore hall in atlanta. welcome both of you. margaret, clearly not the conversation that the president had been hoping to start the new year on, and here we are. in terms of what the white house and the administration can say going forward now that there is somebody assigned now to investigate this, what should he be doing? what more can and should we hear from this president on this issue? >> well, yeah, i think politically and from a public relations perspective the white house knows that if it could get in front of this and give a full some description of basically what the documents are, how they got there, all the questions we are asking that it would probably help them get it over with. apparently the legal side of the white house and biden side are saying you can't do that because now this is a matter that's -- that a special counsel is involved in. and so that dissidents -- that conflict between the legal side and the political side has really created a problem for

. >>> with us margaret talev. good to have you on. here we go again. 2020 all over again. it looks like trump has already announced, not clear the republican party entirely behind him. is the democratic party entirely behind joe biden as their 2024 nominee? >> well, jim, for now the answer to that question is yes, and i think what you're seeing biden do with this series of messagings around the infrastructure spending is a couple of things. there are plenty of swing voters and republicans who do not care about construction under the hudson river or what happens in new york, but looking at what this is part of, it's more than a billion dollars in those mega grants that also have been dedicated to spending in places like account and ohio and north carolina and oklahoma and louisiana and mississippi. and the jobs that come with them and this particular project in new york that mj was just talking about, the promise is the creation of more than 70,000 jobs. and this is all coming ahead of tomorrow's meeting between biden and speaker mccarthy over the spending cuts that republi
