at least high water, that of margate. you saw some of the video that we were able to show earlier, as well as point pleasant beach. he is going to be on his way to point pleasant beach, what he said, if not for the start of the dune projects that should have gotten underway three years after superstorm sandy, you wouldn't see this high water. but that's a point of contention for a number of the residents that continue to live in that area. he did underscore there have been about 90,000 outages, but there are shelters open in every county. if it is safe for you to leave, where you are, and you have lost power, if you can go to a neighbor's home or if you can venture, without getting out on the road in a vehicle, to any number of those shelters, he is the advising you to do so. all right, so, again, the new jersey governor also saying he's working with the new york governor, because they're all experiencing 2 to 3 inches of snowfall per hour. let's check in with our marty savage, who is there in manhattan, where the conditi

this is adams avenue in margate. 24 hours ago, this street covered with water. in fact, just a few hours ago. floodwater throughout this street, it was impassable. take a look for yourself. it is bone dry. the water's receding. in just the last few hours. yesterday, though, as i said, a very different story. take a look at this video and you can see water pouring in off the bay on to the city streets. the mayor telling us, though, at its worst, the flooding here in margate was only moderate. in other parts of new jersey, the situation did not fare as well. in north wildwood in particular, the mayor say it is flooding was worse than superstorm sandy. he said the high tide six inches greater than in the superstorm. he also told that the flooding reached a height of as much as five feet in north wildwood. he said that there are still people in north wildwood who do not have power. there are tens of thousands of people throughout the state of new jersey waiting for the juice to be turned on as utility crews do their best to try and restor christie, he left the campa

it's just offshore palm beach just to the east of boca raton and where you see coral springs and margate and tam rack and that's another strong cluster of thunderstorms that will continue to push toward the northeast and possiblz some severe thunderstorms and also damaging wind gusts and also the flooding all morning long and now we're beginning to see some flooding not only across the highways and the streets there as you can see and it will be ongoing now as we continue to take a look out past western suburbs and i'll jump in here and you can see gray skies out there and i think we're looking at chopper 6 right there, and probably approaching the turnpike area. it's cloudy out there and that's still means that instability is in place. we'll look at doppler radar and there are still storms on the way. again, this was the thunderstorm where we issued the tornado warning earlier right now where we are, we're seeing the reports of a tractor trailer on its side where the turnpike is shut down and behind it, to answer your question, this will be an ongoing weather event not only throughout t

if you look at what is happening in margate, in point pleasant beach, and two places that are fighting hard gaiagainst the du you know. i saw today on the philadelphia affiliates that early this morning already, there was significant water in the streets of margate, and ice floating up the street s ths that had gone the wall, and that the residents and the government in margate says is good enough to protect them from any storm. and this is certainly not super storm sandy, and those streets were flooded this morning at 8:00 a.m., an point pleasant beach the same thing. significant tide, and again, these are the folks fighting against i. and this is the result of it, and not just pleasant beach, but ortley beach, and that project that has been stopped because of the objections of 17 people in point pleasant beach, and 30 people in bay head, and ortley beach is being pounded. now, we put a lot of sand up there at the request of the mayor of toms river, but that sand has already washed away, and if the we had the dune project moving an close the completion in that area, those people in or

ryan young joins me from margate, new jersey.s in southern new jersey, pretty close to atlantic city, and all we see behind you frankly is water. they have major flooding. >> reporter: they do. let me just tell you this. we thought we were going to do this live shot a few minutes ago so we stood here, we thought we would be dry, and all of a sudden you look behind us, the water has started coming over the edge and it's just, it just keeps coming. this has been going on since 7:00, we knew we have to deal with high tide. we thought the water was going away so we drove back to see what would happen. this house, you can see the water just coming over the edge. i will walk my photographer back this way. as you look back towards the water edge where the bay is pushing the water over, it's going back into the streets. we are probably almost in ankle deep right now. we will walk our way out of here and come back around. all day long we have been dealing with heavy winds, ice on the roads, but this is the most significant flooding that w

. >> reporter: margate is a barrier island just on the outskirts of atlantic city. the spot i'm standing in just a few hours ago was covered with floodwater. as you can see, the waters have dramatically started to recede in just the last few hours, a significant difference. and perhaps by the time we are done with this report, much of the water you see behind me could be gone. very different situation, though, 24 hours ago. take a look at video that was recorded yesterday. and you can see water pouring from the bay onto the city streets. the mayor here says the problem is that the bay does not have the type of flood walls that the oceanside of the island has, and that has contributed to the problem. but, again, the situation here was never very severe. very different flooding, though, taking mraie ing place to the s north wildwood, new jersey. we have video from there. the mayor there said the flooding was worse than super starm sandy in 2012. he said the high tides were half a foot greater than they were during the superstorm. he said the floodwaters reached height

a stranded resort towns including margate, temporarily isolated by flood waters this morning when the tides came in. the the water quickly receded but the evening high tides is now just about 20 minutes away, 22 minutes away and it is a major concern. governor chris christie criticized communities today for blocking beach replenishment programs. >> on ortly beach is being pounded. we put a lot of men up there at the request of the mayor of tomorrow's river but that sand has already washed away f we had to do the dune project moving and close to completion in that area those people on the beach would not be suffering the damage and the loss they are today. >> new jersey correspondent nora muchanic in ocean city where flooding, is a problem for residents today. >> reporter: west avenue and tenth street right now look the at what we are looking the at. the water is still flowing and it even got a current. it is enough that some people have had it and decided to evacuate and go to the mainland. >> it is freezing and there is water every where. we will go more inland. >> reporter: today th

there is a big variance in elevation here in margate city. some roads are clear like this one.merged. down the street here, we were looking at other businesses that had water go inside. we would be interested in going there later today and seeing how they are doing because they had sandbags outside their doors and the sandbags really didn't do much. as we wait for high tide, we also wait for the winds to shift around noon today. several flood watches are set to expire and hopefully they have seen the last of this flood. >> reporter: is this one of those seasonal communities? a lot of people in the summertime but not many people this time of the year? >> reporter: that's exactly how it is, martin. there are very few people that came out yesterday at the peak of this flood. just to check out how things were going. for the most part, summer homes are in this area or apartments that are set up for summertime, not necessarily an area that is populated right now. further north in atlantic city, there are many more people out there but that is certainly at a high elevation so they did

look at this picture from manasquan, and take a look at the video from margate city in atlantic county just south of atlantic city. severe flooding on the roads right now. eyewitness news reporter a.j. ross, she is in point pleasant, ocean county. a.j. >> reporter: joe, sandra, been putting on a show here along the beach in point pleasant all day today with this wintry, snowy ice mix that's just been blustery. the wind gusts have been extremely powerful pushing the ocean closer and closer to the shoreline. the good news is that the sand dunes here seem to have withheld the high tide. there's no noticeable erosion. but as we now begin to recover, flooding is certainly the next concern. all day the waves have been crashing here along point pleasant beach wrestling with these double-digit wind gusts. earlier today we caught up with governor chris christie as he visited the shoreline and detailed how crews have been working around the clock to clear the major roadways and highways and restore power to thousands of homes. >> we're now down to 50,000. now, we have very few outages in the nor
