maria, can you just point out one thing, maria when you look at that intraday chart of the s&p 500 just late in the session about 15 minutes before the close, we hit the low of the day at 1168, which is exactly where the 50-day moving average is. i mean that's technically very important that we did bounce off of there. if we break through 1168 tomorrow and then maybe go from the 50 to the 100-day moving average, which is about another 2.5% lower and then 200 days and then the march 5th low. the march 5th low is 1044, that's about 11% down. and i think this is a baste stealth correction. it started a week and a half ago, seven sessions ago that we've seen both the s&p and the nasdaq shedding, what 3.5%, 4.5% a piece those days that we've seen two-plus percent decline. a way of creeping, not one day-events. >> catalyst ahead, ron insana, we've got a pretty good economic report coming out end the week, we're look at jobs, obviously looking at gdp. what are you hearing in terms of what to expect? >> i don't think that people are going short ahead of the jobs numbers. i don't know, people ar

welcome to "closing bell," i'm maria bartiromo here at the new york stock exchange. the stocks were stumbling out of the gates with concerns of the renewed debt increase in greece. market losses are starting to accelerate in the last hour, but we are now off of the worst levels of the afternoon. looking at where we are, 10,853, and energy stocks are on the downside with the decline of the dow, and nasdaq also under selling pressure today. take a look at the nasdaq composite chart is similar intraday, and also bouncing off of the lows, but still down 23 points, about 1% at 2,400. s&p 500 down about 9 points, and 0.75%. let's talk about the closing bell exchange here, and talk about what is behind the moves and what they resooing. my co-host scott wapner, and bob pisani, and rick santelli, and joining us from head quarter is cnbc contributor ron insana. thank you, everybody. thanks for joining me on the call. the markets are better shape than yesterday, but the sent lt -- sentiment is turning. what are you hearing, bob pisani? >> well,t

i'm maria bartiromo here at the new york stock exchange. we have a sizable sell-off going on wall street today as we approach the close, we're here in the lows. new worries that greece's debt problems will in fact spread to other european countries. it's all putting a lot of pressure on the euro, and oil, sending stocks spiraling lower today. of course, the bp story continues as well. the dow and the nasdaq seeing their biggest declines today since early february. take a look at where we stand with the dow jones industrial average down near the lows of the afternoon in the triple digits with decline of 2.wo 5%. 10900. down across the board. biggest decline since february 4. onto the nasdaq, we are seeing heavy selling there as well, and it is across the board, not just in stock, but commodities also seeing a sizable sell-off today. materials and industrials, really the worst-performing large cap s&p 500 groups. nasdaq down 81 points. back below 2500 at 2417 with the decline on the session 3.33%. as you can see right out of the gate this mor

this collapse was actually the repeal of glass-steagall, and there was an amendment put forward by maria cantwell that had a tremendous amount of support, but was never actually voted on. i am curious, and then know you were involved in the repeal when it came up, i am curious what is the administration's position on the reform of the glass-steagall legislation? >> i' have said it, but i beliee this legislation would break the chain that led to the financial accident in four important ways. first, the presence of a consumer financial regulator would have substantially reduced or eliminated and the predatory subprime lending that blew up the housing bubble that was at the center of the crisis. it also would have inhibited the transmission of that global drew a requirement that what was securitized be attained in part and rating agency reform. second, if that first line of defense had not been affected. second, it would have proded for the comprehensive regulation of systemically important financial institutions. there was no one who accepted as their mandate, making sure that lehman's cap
