maria: right.ack: they then danced out the wet market because of the cause of it and the very reason that is you indicated, the statements that are in public domain that the people who originally infected with the virus in wuhan city were not never accessed the wet market came from wuhan's cities doctors and scientist and i think that's a very credible claim that they are making. listen, the fact that w.h.o. is still making the claims to support china now after they have been clearly identified on the international stage as being in china's orbit is really amazing to me. you would think they would be more objective and taking scientific approach as oppose to a political one. maria: everybody is onto them, onto w.h.o. and onto china even though chinese state media is slamming the secretary of state mike pompeo calling the coronavirus claims insane. pompeo said there was enormous evidence that the virus emerged from the laboratory in wuhan and i have a list in front of me that i basically talk about

maria: yeah. what do you think, do you think the precautions are enough, the plexiglass is big use across the country, everybody is put up plexiglass. >> you can see that all of the protections are in play, you see dealers with plastic, protection of faces and you see people in protective gowns, gloves, the whole ppe kind of apparatus and i think you will see that in all of the casino locations particularly in las vegas. the challenge is that the imposition of the procedures is going to limit the number of people that you can have in these facilities to a fraction of what they would be on weekend or busy holiday. maria: that's true. that's a really good point, steve forbes, it's also about confidence, right? all of these things is to try to increase confidence so people actually do go out and spend money. steve: that's right, gary, i'm interested in your views of convention business which is a mainstay of las vegas especially with consumer electronic show in january, do you feel -- how long is it

maria: mr. secretary, let me switch gears and ask you about china, and here, i want to take you back and really reiterate your background. you come from the world of intelligence. you of course are a west point graduate, the finest military academy in the world. you were the head of the cia. you were on the house intel committee when you were in congress, you have been investigating china, and zeroing in on behavior at china, for 10 years. can you assess the situation today? what is china's motives, the communist party motives? so it's a different chinese communist party today than it was 10 years ago and i think the remarks that president trump gave on friday of this past week reflect that. this is the chinese communist party that has come to view itself as intent upon the destruction of western ideas , western democracies, western values and puts americans at risk. the list is long, whether it's stealing american intellectual property, destroying hundreds and millions of jobs here in the unite

maria: yeah.i know, i understand that chinese companies have been buying up all of the meet -- meat at reduced prices. they are capitalizing on that crisis. i want to ask you about breast rates, you have to trade on where we are and we had robert kaplin who said rates are going to be at these levels until at least 2023 which is what cornerstone macro research has been saying. what are your thoughts and how do you invest with rock-bottom rates like this? >> i think he's certainly plausible. he's a very bright man and i do follow him closely. when you look at it and you look at the unemployment number just say for this friday, even before this employment situation that we are facing now, you know, the the fed has really pointed to the rate which is what we will get on friday and basically saying that they're not too sure that that rate is telling us the whole picture, so we think rates will be on hold here for a very long time. you know, when you look at treasury market, ten-year yields, we are trad

maria. i just want to push back on one issue that's already been discussed which is this massive monetary stimulus which we have had but, you know, i believe, maria, in addition to all of the other problems the economy has we are in the midst of one of the greatest deflations, deflations in our country's history. you've seen this obviously in the massive decline in commodities. as you know when i was under consideration of the fed, i was add big advocate of commodity prices to see where all prices are headed and they've been very -- prices are down 60 to 70% this year. you obviously see that in oil and now you're seeing in consumer prices as well. we've got 2 months of very significant negative results in commodity prices so i would ask the folks on this panel what -- what about the deflation problem. maybe the fed needs to put more stimulus into this economy. maria: hank, what do you say? more than $7 trillion in stimulus when you consider fiscal and -- and monetary. you think we need more,

maria: yeah.estaurants were sounding the alarm on all of these programs, owners across the country saying that covid-19 precautions, social distancing and putting caps on the number of customers could wipe them out, andy. so how serious is this concern? i mean, when you don't have the foot traffic and you know this firsthand, how much of an issue is this for the bottom line? you're talking about these companies living on cash flow and they don't have any right now, andy. >> well, let me tell you. it depends by sector, maria. this is not something that's out there very broadly yet so i'm glad i get to talk about it. the quick service, the fast food restaurant ceos that i've talked to, my friends in the industry, are telling me that their sales are positive over last year. so they're doing better than they were doing before the pandemic because not only because the third party delivery service which is up, but the drive-throughs. quick service restaurants have drive-throughs. if you go by a quick se

maria: yeah. we're going to talk about the ppp as well. i want to get your take on that because small business needs help and needs help now, and some of the issues and structure around the payment protection program were just not clear for certain banks, and we had all sorts of mess-ups with that ppp. but you've got to say that's a lot of money. do you think it's going to work? i'm going to talk to robert kaplan in a minute about this, all this money being thrown at the economy, all this cash flooding the economy. do you think it's going to work and take us out of this recession sooner rather than later? >> maria, it's a great question because right now what we have very clearly are two economies. we've got the market that just had its best month since 1987, over $6 trillion of liquidity being pumped into the system, and you're seeing the beneficiaries of that is the stock market. as we talked about in december, which i'm referring to again, where else are investors going to go with interest rate
