maria: yeah.eah. that makes sense. jamie, let's talk jpm for a moment. you had another great year last year. the investment bank on fire with all of the m&a, spacs, all of the trading profits. but over the last year we were questioning loan growth. it was not where many expected it to be. go through the consumer and the commercial business and how does loan growth look and what do you expect for 2022? >> yeah. so i'm not -- i'm the opposite of -- a i don't think loan growth by itself is a good thing. loan growth is an outcome of decisions you make. let me separate the consumer from companies for a second. on the consumer side there's plenty of loan growth in mortgages and a lot of payoffs in credit cards. that's because individuals were strong. usually when loan growth goes down or negative, that's because people are over-leveraged. it's the opposite here. loan growth was low because people had a lot of money and were able to pay off, i think it was $155 billion of credit card debt, et cetera and

good morning, maria.t and on the bond market and you know, in general, look, we're going to have to work you through this period of time with regard to risk assets. we see the volatility in the stock market short-term. last month we did talk about the balance sheet. we thought the fed would be using the balance sheet as a more aggressive tool with this tightening cycle relative to what we saw last time around coming out of 2015 and the housing crisis. so if you look at that, if you look at the debate now, we moved -- you know, the pricing in the market has moved very aggressively short-term. we've got four rate hikes priced in. we do think the fed is going to go in march and there's a lot of chatter in the market that they may come in march and actually 50. so we don't think that's going to be the case. we think when the fed removes aca days and a that's really -- accommodation, and really i think it's important for investors to realize, all we're doing here is removing emergency conditions. interest rate

maria: yeah. think you're spot-on on that. it really struck me the other day when i realized they were still in the bond programs, buying up securities every month. they're going to just turn this around immediately in march, start raising rates and start taking that balance sheet down from the close to $9 trillion. david, knowing that we are now expecting four rate hikes, at least. dan niles just said five, six. jamie dimon said six. does it make sense to you that we're going to see bigger moves every month, every meeting, rather? in other words, maybe it's not 25 basis points but it's a half a point raise. do you think we'll start seeing 50 basis point raises beginning in march? >> it's a possibility. and it's all about inflation. you know, we get the february inflation read about six days before the march fomc meeting. so there's probably another opportunity there for the fed to pivot even more hawkish or maybe a little bit more doveish but it is realistic that -- what jerome powell has said is
