maria: welcome back.e for the word on wall street, top investors watching your money joining me right now former gartman letter editor, dennis guardedman is here and adam johnson with me all morning long. let's talk earnings, jp morgan and wells fargo reporting double beats on earnings, the stocks are the highs of the morning, jpm, the stock shot upm numbers, what do you find most interesting and would you buy the stock here. >> yes, i would buy it. i've been buying bank of america specifically, jp morgan is the largest bank, bank of america is the second largest. maria: b of a reports on tuesday. >> correct. what i like, there are two things in particular about jp morgan's earnings this morning. number one, they were so much better than the estimates which i think speaks to the fact that there's just been too much negativity. we're expecting the worst and we're not getting it thank goodness. point number two, as evidence of that, book value actually rose 9% at jp morgan. that is a big number. so big gain

maria: yeah.at the nasdaq, it's off 14 year to date, and yetst the largely a narrow rally. it's those big names in tech. real quick, larry, what's your assessment of first quarter earnings? because we're going to be hearing from these ceos and getting some guidance on the first quarter reporting season in about a week and a half. >> well, see that's really important because in the next, it's like you said, next week and a half, two weeks the financials start reporting, and a lot of the damage and a lot of the crazy movements in markets that we've seen like the move in treasuries, that's why the move index is so important that measures treasury volatility and the vix. so volatility in treasuries not so muching equities, but more so treasuries and bonds was at, you know, we're talking about -- [inaudible] numbers. so a lot of that's going to show up in the earnings data for the banks. that's probably not going to make some people happy. and then the rolling problem with the can credit crisis impacti

maria: that's right.k the last two years of the obama administration saw this increase of partnership and use of the justice department, the fbi got involved in the -- in the elections and he didn't stop it and so this erosion of -- of free speech and equal justice under the law. you look at what happened with the stanford law students. you look at what happened with this indictment, the russia hoax, even the things with what happened after president trump lost the election and -- and he protested the election and we had a riot at the capitol. norms are being broken down on each side more so, i think you see in some of these -- some of these da's particularly right now but the two values have to be established if we are going to secure democracy and that's going to take leadership, leadership that really sees the values and brings the country around those two values. maria: well, i mean, how do you ensure that the federal agencies are not weponized. you write even back to hillary clinton and the way that

maria: yeah.nd i think the american people see this. a new cnn poll finds 76% of people think that politics played at least some role in the decision to indict trump. 76%. i mean, when you have 76% of the people questioning the legal decisions, our legal system, what does that mean in a practical sense longer term in terms of the the impact on america, the impact on our legal system, the impact to trust our federal agencies? >> well, it harms all of us. whether you love trump, whether you hate trump, we live and frankly die by the idea that our legal system is fair, that it's impartial, that you don't get treated differently because you are a pauper or a prince and in this case bragg, who has run for office, i mean, his campaign was on i'll get trump and he i'll filled his promise but i'm telling you, he's getting ready thousand to have to justify his decisions and that legal team is going to bring it to him. maria: yeah. when you say a legal tsunami, what does that mean? in other words, the trump

maria: yeah., congressman, i mean, this is really happening. i mean, trump is preparing to surrender after this indictment on tuesday. >> i know. maria: now, the manhattan d.a. has confirmed that he used federal money in his investigation into this so-called hush payment that was made to stormy daniels. give us the significance of that. >> well, they keep saying, oh, you're not supposed to be involved, you know, this is a local prosecution decision, and we're saying, well, look, you used federal funds, you conceded that in the letter that we sent to you a few days ago. you conceded that. we think this grew out of the special counsel investigation, as i said earlier, which is obviously a federal statute. and maybe most importantly, this involves the most important election we have, the election for president of the united states. remember, the dod wouldn't bring the case, cy vance, the previous district attorney to, would not bring the case. even al alvin bragg himself, even though he campaigned af

maria: 8% growth sounds really unrealistic. we are also getting a good look at the macro story from the other indicators, katherine. we've got the economic data including the first read of the first quarter gdp. that's out on thursday. the march pce index out on friday, giving us a look at inflation. and then you've got the may federal reserve meeting next week. the futures market pricing in an 88% chance for another quarter point rate hike. what are your thoughts on growth? >> earnings are important. i think the mack macro picturee most important. as you say, maria, we have a lot of indicators coming up. but they're not going to show us anything different than what we've seen year-to-date which is stagflation, stagflation being low, not negative growth sticky high inflation. in that environment you can have some cyclicals rotating into catching a bid but my bet is from here to year-end we're going to see a lot of down side. that's because the market is in a vast majority expecting the feder

maria: yeah. i mean, look, then you've got this gag order and pretty much they are doing this, trying to take trump down and they don't want any questions about it. they're actually threatening that they'll throw him in jail for 30 days if he even mentions it. he's not allowed to talk about it. >> yeah. i mean, that's just disgusting. and you know, it's adding insult on top of insult and the democrats had better be careful of what they're doing and what they're unleashing. they keep on making precedents on behalf of donald trump and breaking norms of politics and it's going to many come back to bite them and it's going to hurt the entire country and it's damaging the political system and for what? for one man. why are they so frightened of donald trump? why don't they let the political process play out naturally and let the american people make up their minds. they don't trust the american people and they have convinced -- yeah. maria: i think they've been exposed because, yeah, you asked the righ
