maria: exactly. we are watching macy's stock trade higher this morning on that beat that lauren just brought us, we're going to get back to lauren when we get walmart numbers. we're watching a market that is waiting on all these numbers. lauren, what can you tell us? >> we've got walmart's numbers, revenue, stronger than expected, rising i'd say about 5%, $160.8 billion in the quarter. eps adjusted at $1.53 a share. u.s. sales in the quarter, 109.4 billion. i'm just trying to get more of this for you. walmart as you guys know, same store sales up 4.4%. okay. so there you go. that's the number we're looking for, hays stronger than exacted, the estimate was 3.2%. solidly stronger. mark said there's no stigma attached to shopping at walmart anymore. it's not your grandfather's walmart. they're spending $500 million to remodel 117 stores, they want them to be cooler, modern, where you can go to a computer and get information about your order because amazon is beating walmart when it comes to delivery and

maria: yeah.ages, right, the employment cost index growing at a faster pace than expected last quarter. up 1.1% year over year. wages and benefits up 4.3% in the third quarter. you've got another piece out talking about fed officials and wage growth. you say fed officials think wage growth needs to slow to about 3%, 3.5% a year for inflation o fall to the 2% target. the big question is what it will a take for that to happen, particularly given the brisk consumer spending and hiring in recent months. layer onto that the strikes we're seeing and demands from labor that they want wages up. isn't that also playing into this inflation story? >> yeah, if you take that employment cost index report that came out yesterday, that's a very high quality piece of information especially that's how it will be seen at the fed because it adjusts for certain shifts in the composition of labor. what it really means, though, maria, is that you can look at a this as a glass half full or glass half empty situation. and
