joining us on the phone, boston globe crime reporter maria cramer. maria, last year the first bomb exploded at 2:49 p.m. you're at the finish line. was there any reaction from the crowd when 2:49 came? >> it's interesting you should say that. i was waiting for reaction, and there was none. people were ringing their cow bells. they were cheering. the runners were going for the finish line. it seemed like people were not aware of it. that was one of the things that our editor said. you know, he keep an eye out for people to see if they mark the hour at all. they didn't. >> it's incredible. maria, the marathon director called the route the safest place on the planet. the safest place to be on april 21st. what's security like that tl? >> very tight. you have lines of police officers, and what they did was they roped off -- and by noon they just weren't allowing people. they said, nope, it's too congested. poom had to go to nearby and other outlying streets. they just didn't want the congestion. they want to be able to move to the crowds and they wanted th
