i'm maria hinojosa. this is one on one. so jarrett barrios, welcome to our show. >> thank you for having me. >> hinojosa: you are the youngest ever and the first latino to head the gay and lesbian alliance against defamation, glaad. >> glaad. >> hinojosa: glaad. now, a lot of people might know what glaad is, but there might be a lot of people who also don't know. so what is it that glaad does? >> we are an organization that works for the full equality of gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender people. we believe in all of us, including gay folks, being accepted, respected, and valued, but understand that there's a lot of discrimination, there's a lot of homophobia out there in politics, but also in culture, in life. and to really move ahead towards full equality, the belief of glaad is that we have to impact the culture, the culture change, change people's hearts and minds. so what we don't do... you won't find us in washington, dc lobbying on a bill. we d't have lawyers in court. what we do do is we work through the media to ge

i'm maria hinojosa. this is one on one. dr. haleh esfandiari, welcome to our program. >> thank you for having me. >> hinojosa: so, in the fall of 2007... no, in the spring of 2007, suddenly i go to my computer and i start seeing these emails that say, "there is an iranian-american academic who is being held in a tehran prison. do everything that you can to try to get her out." and of course i started sending that to many people, and i received it from women's groups, from journalist groups, from human rights groups. i don't remember any of those emails saying that haleh esfandiari was a grandmother who was detained. how did you survive? you were 105 days in solitary confinement. >> it was very tough, maria, but i am a very disciplined person. and being 67 years old and a student of iran, having studied carefully, a lifetime, iran, i knew how to handle my interrogators, and i knew how to make it possible for myself to survive under those very difficult and dire conditions, both physical and mental. >> hinojosa: when you say that

i'm maria hinojosa. this is one on one. tsai chin, you are the grand dame of theater, of film. you have been in the james bond movie you only live twice and casino royale, the interpreter, memoirs of a geisha. probably most people will remember you from the movie the joy luck club. and because... in preparation for this interview i watched the joy luck club now three or four times. what an amazing movie. the joy luck club really was an extraordinary movie. but for you as an actress, when it was, you know, a sliver of this extraordinary career... but what did that movie mean for you? >> i think first of the movie as a threshold, you know? it was the first movie ever that 99.6%, or whatever, they're all asians. this has never happened before. and it became a hit. not a, you know, blockbuster hit, but a hit. and so that shows that a lot of asians do have talent. and therefore, in a way, there's no excuse to say, "well, that's very difficult." for me, of course, it's life changing, because i was living in london then, and the hollywood door was suddenly opened to me. and people sta

i'm maria hinojosa, this is one on one. ralph nader, it's great to have you on the show. >> thank you. >> hinojosa: so here's the first question i want to throw out to you, because, you know, you're a consumer advocate. as a kid who was growing up in the 1960s and 1970s, you know, ralph nader... everybody knew what you were doing. but paint a picture of what our country would look like if you hadn't existed; if you hadn't, you know, brought in the regulations, what would our country look like? >> well, me and a lot of other people. >> hinojosa: okay, but... >> but well, for example, we wouldn't have mandatory motor vehicle safety standards, we wouldn't have recall requirements for companies who sell you a defective car. we got through meat and poultry inspection laws; there were virtually no inspection standards of diseased meat and all the illness that comes from it, never mind the fraud. environmental protection-- there wasn't anything like that in washington. legal services for the poor-- this came out of the 1960s as wel
