let's ask maria molina. what is ahead? maria: hello, everyone.nfortunately for california we will continue to see these rounds of heavy rain and more snow across the state. we do have the drought conditions in place so we need the moisture but unfortunately getting too much too quickly. heavy rain moving in parts of northern california and that is the snow coming down on the higher elevations, so what is in the future here? thursday and friday, another storm system are writing by the end of the work week producing heavier rain from san francisco northward across northern california. for into the rain possible in some areas generally to north of lake tahoe to the east, you can expect several more areas of rain and a lot more snow as well in the higher elevations. a number of flood watches in effect, like the extended continuing to see more rounds of heavier rain impacting california. here's a look at the winter storm warnings in effect a large a large section of california with a foot or more possible. you get the snowfall, not looking at a flood

here with more on what the weather looked like when the plane went missing is maria molina.ee you this morning. >> good to see you all. i was reading a report from the associated press that one of the meteorologists from indonesia said the thunderstorms in that area at the time the plane went missing reached lels of 44 -- reached levels of 44,000 feet. that is very cold that far up. that is something to keep in mind, another one of the factors that could have played into this plane's disappearance. looking at the weather conditions we saw at the time the plane disappeared we had very strong thunderstorms and they are all associated with something called the itcz it is a line of very strong thunderstorms that go very near the e-- equator around the earth. we saw strong storms in that particular area with lightning, with strong wind gusts, both horizontal and vertical. that produces all of that turbulence. here's a look at the satellite image at the time the plane went missing. a lot of storms across parts of the java sea. the only good thing about this particular area is we h

meteorologist maria molina is live for us at the fox weather center. aria, they certainly don't need this right now. >> we're talking about another storm system moving in. the good news this storm system is not as powerful as the last they got where weigh saw all the mudslides and rockslides across parts of california and snowfall in the higher elevations. this has rain stretching as far north as areas in the northwest and of we do have snow for higher elevations. that is welcome news. because we have drought conditions apass parts of the west especially in california. as we head later today into california. the storm system will move in, much-needed moisture for rain in lower elevation and snow for highest elevations. some highest peaks could be looking locally a foot of snow. overall general accumulations across the mountains are ranging between six and eight inches of snowfall. over the next several days, so we're dealing with this storm right now. we'll continue to see the storms moving in as we get into the latter half of the work week. eventually,

maria molina is tracking it all for us. >> good morning.have areas of rain across parts of the east. i want to focus in on california because out here we have a significant storm system moving into parts of california. we are looking at as much as 2-4 inches that have been received already across northern parts of california out there around the san francisco area. yesterday we received rain as far south as southern california including the los angeles area. because of this we have flood aid vise ryes in effect. we have ongoing flooding in these areas. the issue is some of these reasons have been experiencing wildfires in the past. we have burnt areas that means the soil really can't absorb much moisture so you get a lot of runoff and a lot of flooding much are another concern as well on the hillside and higher elevations. along the higher elevations we have winter storm warnings in effect that is because we can see 1-2 feet of snowfall locally even higher amounts in some of the high elevations out here. we really need the moisture but it i

meteorologist maria molina joins us live with the story. ria, so disappointed to hear about the storm. where is it now and where is it headed? >> that's right. hello heather and everyone. we have a storm system we're tracking across portions of the eastern half of the country. when you hear christmas eve some system you're thinking possibly some snow but with this storm system conditions will be warm and a little bit tropical out there across portions of the southeast. we'll look at areas of heavy rain anywhere from parts of new england all the way down to parts of florida come wednesday. so the day before christmas, or christmas eve it will be raining out there. for some of you will have lightning out there. on this side storm system we'll see snow across upper portions of the great lakes and across portions of the midwest. so we could see a white christmas for some of you out there. across the northern rockies, we have another storm system that will be arriving bringing in areas of rain for lower elevations and some mountain snow. right no

maria molina outside. >> good morning. did you guys have a great christmas. >> how about you?to take a look at the weather conditions across the country. we had a storm system produce heavy snow across parts of the rockies. snow in utah. higher elevations picked up about a foot of snow. that system bringing in snow across portions of colorado and into new mexico. take a look at the forecast. by saturday it is forecast to be impacting portions of the glaze, midwest and down -- portions of the great lakes, midwest and down into louisiana. by sunday it will keep moving eastward and bringing rain across parts of mississippi, tennessee and up into interior portions of the northeast. we have winter weather advisories in effect because of the storm system across parts of the plains, parts of nebraska, parts of zach into -- parts of south dakota into minnesota. heavier totals around the higher elevations of the rockies. current temperatures, relatively mild across the country. cold spots across colorado. 17 in the city of denver. but things are going to change as we head into this wee

maria molina has the latest on the weather gift for you. >> good morning.veral days. it's been mild for most. over the last few weeks, relatively mild season. look at the current temperatures, that arctic air is back in places like minneapolis and also in denver. current temperatures out there are below zero. you factor in a little breeze and this is what it currently feels like. currently feels like 16 below zero in denver. 20 below in minneapolis. in some of the areas, when you're talking 20 degrees or even colder below zero, then you're looking at the risk for hypothermia. keep that in mind. really bundle up. over the next several morning, we'll continue to see that cold air expanding eastward and southward. in places like new york city, by wednesday morning, you'll see those temperatures in the 20s. 20s as well for places like louisville raleigh, north carolina, and even in little rock arkansas by early thursday morning. so again that cold air continuing to expand across the country, helping usher in that new year. otherwise we have a winter storm acros

maria molina is in the weather center to tell us what facing our out there. his is producing all kinds of travel hit the send one of them is in the form of severe weather. we have a tornado watch that was issued a few minutes ago and this includes portions of the gulf coast, louisiana, mississippi and alabama are looking at that record tornadoes. we had multiple 20 warnings issued through morning hours but those have been lifted and now we are looking at a severe thunderstorm warnings in effect. we're looking at some strong wind gusts associated with storms and the severe weather risks will move eastward including portions of florida, george and also extreme southern parts of south carolina the risks being tornadoes and damaging winds with those storms. we had delays that are piling up at the airport especially across parts of the northeast, new york city delays averaging an hour and a -- fill the international looking at them averaging 30 minutes but that makes it a lot worse as we head into tomorrow with at storm system intensifying and impact portions of th

meteorologist maria molina is live in the fox extreme weather center with more on that. >> reporter:some of the storms that occur near the equator, it's classified as the intertropical conversion zone, so we tend to see a lot of thunderstorm activity near will equator, and that's exactly where they were flying through and some very powerful thunderstorms some of the strongest that we see on earth happen in this region. and december and january really are some of the wettest time periods of the year in that particular time, area. so that's something else to keep in mind. thunderstorm activity out there isn't really that unusual. and these storms, it's estimated that they had a height of about 44,000 feet. it is known that storms can reach higher levels than that, past 50,000 feet. so the storm system, again, very powerful but not completely unusual. they've also been experiencing some severe flooding across that region and some of the conditions they would encounter with the thunderstorm would be severe turbulence also some lightning and very strong horizontal and vertical winds. they

maria molina has got some details on this. see what's happening there, maria. >> that's right. good morning. good to see you all. hello, everybody. we picked up more than 20 inches of snowfall across portions of new york. other areas seeing significant install across states like new hampshire and maine. we have that nor'easter bringing in snow across parts of pennsylvania and western new york this morning including the city of buffalo with up to a half a foot of snow expected for some of those areas. out across parts of the west coast we have one of the strongest storm systems to hit this area in years. locally up to eight inches of rainfall possible. that is along coastal areas. you're looking at wind gusts of hurricane force strength. we have high wind warnings in effect, very widespread across california. two to three feet of snow possible and wind gusts over 80 miles per hour. that will be producing dangerous whiteout conditions across some of the higher elevations of california. the one bit of good news is we need that moi

maria molina joins us from the streets of new york city where currently outside it's 38 degrees. >> it's hello, everyone. speaking of a chilly morning, we expect a bit of a wintry mix across portions of the northeast. look at this system moving through. we have early this morning areas of snow and a wintry mix across portions of the mid-atlantic. later today into tonight we're going to see a more widespread wintry mix and even more snow from areas of new england spreading down to virginia and portions of ohio. accumulations are going to be very light so not a huge concern but it will be an issue on the roadways. farther west in california the story is the ongoing drought, extreme drought conditions in place still but we're getting much-needed rain in places like san francisco and also los angeles. temperature-wise much colder across the northeast. look at caribou, maine action highs in the teens. 40 degrees in new york city, a cool-down compared to yesterday. we were looking at temperatures into the 50's. in texas also on the chilly side. highs there only in the 40's and 50's. let's head
