maria teresa, what we've seen so far, from what you've seen, is this enough for the communities that have so much care about this immigration reform, we're talking about latino and asian-americans, is this enough for them to support it? >> more than anything, republicans, what they did, put their toe in the water and are trying to see what individuals such as the media pundits, but also the community, business, and other folks are listening to and what they are paying attention to. quite frankly, we need to see meat on this. what you're hearing from the republicans, they want enforcement first. under president obama, we've had more deportations and enforcement than any other president, so that is not where they should be leaning. they should say what are we going to do with the 11 million undocumented? you're talking about our families and until you see some meat around that piece of legislation, it's going to be a wait and see. >> first out of the gate, though, we've got the one page. what do you think, is it aiming the right way? >> everybody's cautious, but everybody's saying let'

maria teresa could you mar, president and ceo of voto latino, and msnbc contributor., a msnbc contributor and hits up the maddow blog, and kelly goth. congressman mccarthy, the third ranking house republican, saying he supports a path to legal status, but not citizenship. speaker boehner says he wants immigration done in 2014. can we be optimistic? >> i think you'll see a lot of movement. they realize this will be a huge sure for them when it comes to the midterm elections. that's why boehner is signaling he wants to support it. i think they'll have a different time if they don't include a pathway to citizenship. the 11 million that are undocumented, i think a lot of them would accept it, but are they going to be part of -- left out when it comes to big political decisions, but i also think we'll see within the republican party they don't want to do any movement under after the primaries. that will hurt them. if anything, a lot of latino voters will say we understand you're playing politics with our families, and that will be tough to reconcile. >> steve, you can toug

with a welcome, i'm going to begin with you, maria teresa. watching the rhetoric versus the action. what did you think of speaker boehner's explanation for this piecemeal approach? >> it isn't a surprise. it's the substance of what that will look like. as luke just mentioned, it will be very heavy on protecting our borders and national security. that's really two different sides of a counsel. one is how do you prevent -- and then how do you deal with the undocumented people one or border today. the idea that many republicans -- not many, i would say the minority of folks in consequence want a legalization without a pathway to citizenship, highly contexted morning, and i think that's what we need to watch out for. when they say piecemean, is it going to be some economic stimulus. >> okay, republican congressman steve -- talking about paul ryan, he was on the daily rundown yesterday. he laid out a rough draft of the principles they were working on. let's listen to what he said. >> that's the kind of process we envision, which is not a special p

and msnbc contributor marie is a teresa kumar. maria, let me start with you. has always had power. now with big money, do you expect they will be even more powerful? >> i think the fact that they're organizing and realizing they have to get a lock step strategy, that's one of the reasons they recently met over 26 conservative groups met to talk about how to you elevate social conservatism and make sure everybody's on message. but let's not forget what happened with romney. romney when he was governor his wife contributed to planned parenthood. she was pro choice. and the moment that came out, the evangelicals backed a i wa i. it will be interesting to see how they themselves start splitting up. when the gop came out with a rebranding strategy, you had a swath of evangelicals saying they should support gay marriage. it will be an interesting fight in between them. >> you're right. you raise very good points there. you know, frank, let me go back to this republican congressman steve king far minute. he weighed in on the "duck dynasty" star's recent controversial

joining me now is congresswoman karen bash democrat from california and msnbc contributor maria teresaoth for coming on the show tonight. congresswoman, so republicans now are back to blaming single moms for poverty in america. >> you know, it's really important because you almost want to laugh at what they are saying, but what they are attempting to do -- we're on the 50th anniversary of president johnson's speech on the war upon university and launching the war on poverty and we cannot forget one minute to allow them to act as though they want to address poverty because you're talking about the republican party that essentially wants to dismantle the safety net. what they believe is that poor folks need a pep talk and a kick in the butt and that's the way you reduce poverty without looking at some of the structural issues. it's wonderful eric cantor says schools are needed. that's the case. but then he done want to provide funding for schools. people need jobs, we need to raise the minimum wage, we need to extend one employment, there are specific things we need to do to lift people
