marianne rafferty has more on what officials call an unusual flu season. >> reporter: we are only about the flu season but the illness has already proving to be unusual. according to the cdc, the main virus this year is influenza b. it's a strain that tends to affect children more than other age groups. it is the first time the b virus has dominated in nearly 30 years. as of january 4th, 32 children nationwide have died from influenza the season. that is twice the number of children who died by the same point last year. while the strain hits kids the hardest, it affects our less severe on the elderly. the agency predicts there could be fewer deaths overall from the illness this year. >> there are a lot of children ill and fewer elderly ill. that's why we are seeing high levels of illness and not such high levels of hospitalization and mortality. >> reporter: doctors are trying to determine why this strain is harder on children. experts are urging people to take steps to protect themselves and others. the best thing you can do, get vaccinated. >> the more people that vaccinate, the more
