marianne, you spent your day looking into this for us. what did the south bay labor council tell you today? well, the council executive director told me that yes, there is fear in the community. she acknowledged that. but she also said that that's why it's more important than ever to have one source or a place where people can go for accurate information about what's really happening with ice enforcement in the community so that it doesn't spread mass fear. she also said it's important for businesses to work with their employees and also elected officials, so that people can feel safe at work. and she said that she does not anticipate that there will be mass numbers of people calling in sick to work. what about restaurant owners, marianne? do they have concerns? they do have concerns. and i talked to one restaurant owner in san jose today. he told me he did have two workers call in sick today, but of course, he cannot tell me whether or not that has anything to do with any fear of ice enforcement. it could just be two random sick calls. b

marianne. are an estimated 10,394 homeless people living here in santa clara county, across the bay area and in the state as a whole. about two thirds of homeless residents live on the streets, while the rest stay in shelters in santa clara county. the number is up 5% compared to the last count back in 2023. no surprise whatsoever. that's probably even an undercount. there's been there's a consistent number of people that continually get priced out of san jose, and they end up on the streets. there was a lot of people who ended up getting evicted after covid, after the protections ended across much of the bay area. homelessness is on the rise in contra costa county. it increased by 20% compared to 2023. san mateo county saw a 15% increase, and the number of homeless in san francisco is up 10%. homeless advocates say drug and mental health challenges are also contributing to the problem, but there is some progress. in november, santa clara county announced it is now housing more homeless veteran

in seaside, marianne favro, nbc, bay area news. we continue to follow breaking news in los angeles tonight, where a ferocious wildfire has forced 30,000 people to flee their homes. luckily, so far, no injuries reported, but the palisades fire has already destroyed multiple homes, ballooning to more than 1200 acres since just 10:00 this morning. several bay area cal fire crews are already in southern california, assisting with the firefight. some neighbors even had to flee on foot. dozens of cars abandoned on palisades drive in the mad rush to get out of the neighborhood. and fire crews then had to clear the road using a bulldozer so they could get in some of those cars, catching fire from flying embers. governor newsom is down in l.a. urging people to act on evacuation orders and telling others in the area to have a fire plan ready. with the santa ana winds expected to pick up even more this evening, you may feel at home that you're fine. down in riverside county, san bernardino county, down in ventura county. other parts of the st

marianne favro joins us from cupertino with more. ruben vargas is a junior here at cupertino high school. he just launched his website yesterday. he says he wanted to give fire victims one place to go to access all the services they need. after days of watching images of flames spreading in southern california and the devastation the infernos left behind, 16 year old cupertino high school student ruben varghese knew he wanted to help, so he turned to what he knows and worked nonstop over two days to create this website. save dash l a.org. i wanted to make it so if you wanted to help or if you needed help, it could all be in one website and one stop shop for fire survivors. the website provides everything from recovery centers to links to state and federal agencies, even information on where to turn for help if you lost your job because of the fires. the site also has information for people wanting to donate cash, supplies or help in other ways. for example, you can volunteer your house for shelter if someone's house got burned down.
