nbc bay area's marianne favro live near the whale in richmond. what's going on here? >> well, scientists don't know yet, but they're certainly looking into it, terry. i can tell you the whale that washed up here off richmond is a gray whale and it washed up on the other side of this sandbar. video from our nbc bay area sky ranger shows it washed up on the beach. the marine mammal center first received reports about this whale spotted over the weekend. it appears to have a section of its tail missing. also today, another whale was spotted washed up on the rocks off the coast of pacifica. i just got confirmation that is also a gray whale. that makes found deadnrea waters in just five weeks. i just got off the phone with noaa, and they tell me we are approaching a record number of dead whales this year. with 28 discovered on the west coast. 21 of them here in the waters off california. necropsy found many of these whales are dying from malnutrition. now scientists are trying to look at their food source, fish, worms, crabs, and determine why so many of these whales are d
