nbc bay area's marianne favro has the exclusive story. marianne, scary stuff. >> reporter: it really is, anoushah. well, this happened at 10:15 last night. a neighbor here on loma alta avenue was watching tv when she looked out her back window and saw a mountain lion peering back at her. well, now neighbors are concerned that that mountain lion is getting too close to people. this video shows a large mountain lion peering through gatos. the two dogs inside bark, and the mountain lion runs off. this is a close-up of the big cat. neighbors say they were surprised to see a mountain lion caught on tape in someone's patio so close to downtown. >> shock. you know, you've seen coyotes down here, but a mountain lion in los gatos? i've never seen anything -- i've lived here for over ten years. so it's a little scary. what's it doing here for a start? >> reporter: roland bizon has seven dogs including hercules and lola. he's worried what might happen if one of them came face to face with a cat this size. >> i would not leave them in my back yard uns

nbc bay area's marianne favro is at s.j.p.d. with the latest. anne. >> reporter: anoushah, that sergeant who was dragged and pinned is now hospitalized tonight with serious injuries. and sources tell us the man who was shot and killed is a suspected gang member. >> shots fired, shots fired. >> reporter: this is sound of police radios. officers announcing shots fired near story r just before 1:00 today. san jose police say while investigating a stolen car, they spotted a suspect and ordered him to get out of a car. instead, police say the man drove off, hitting an officer, dragging him 10 feet, and then pinning him against a parked car. three officers opened fire, killing the suspect. stephanie flores was just feet away and says she heard at least eight gunshots. [ speaking foreign language ] >>> we heard shots really fast like they were all shot at the same time. the sergeant who was dragged and pinned was taken to a nearby hospital and is expected to survive. >>> the shooting happened in a bustling aa of surrounded by apartments with young famil

marianne favro is on campus for us with these new details. marianne? >> reporter: so even the students that we spoke with today who said that they weren't surprised to learn about say they were shocked to learn about this newest number, $6.5 million. it is the largest amount so far in the college admissions scandal. how much is a stanford education worth to you? for one chinese family, the answer may be $6.5 million. that's how much investigators claim the family paid consultant william singer, the mastermind behind the college admissions scandal to get their daughter admitted to stanford in the spring of 2017. students we talked with today were upset. >> as a person who's very poor and had to work very hard to get here, that's really ridiculous that you can just pay your way into these amazing opportunities that like a lot of people have worked hard for. >> i guess it's pretty shocking, just that a. >> reporter: no one in the family connected to the $6.5 million payoff has yet to be charged. stanford issued today sayingrsit did not receive $6.5 millio

marianne favro joins us live where teachers and the district are still talking at this hour. >> the teachers just came out and gave us a briefing about the negotiations and telling us they have now been willing to tell us their demands from the original 10% raise that they were asking for to accepting a 3.2% cost of living adjustment. it's not a done deal yet. they are going back into the negotiating room, and in the meantime all of these teachers have been out here all day and they have been picketing. what they have been told though is that for now they should plan not to be mighty teachers ♪ >> reporter: drumming up support for a pay raise, more than 60 striking teachers walked the picket line today. while their union negotiates with the new haven unified school district for a pay increase. the district is offering a one-time bonus and 1% raise. in a statement, the district says any additional increase would require significant cuts that would jeopardize student safety. this second grade teacher at the a barker isn't buying it. >> they have not made any cuts to strast costs. >> the union
