nbc bay area's marianne favro spoke to neighbors as police search for the gunman. reporter the shooting happened around eight last night. neighbors tell us they heard three gunshots, and then they saw a car parked here with bullet holes. belmont police responded to reports of gunfire near hiller and irwin streets last night. around 810. neighbor thomas martin describes what he heard before police arrived. i heard some shot, what sounded like shots, and, i thought it was maybe fireworks, but then about 10 to 20 minutes later, we walked outside and the police were roping off the area, and there was paramedics, giving chest compressions to a man on the ground. police say a 27 year old man died at the scene from multiple gunshot wounds. neighbors say it appeared the victim was parked in a black sedan. and they noticed damage to the front windshield of his car. i saw some gunshots through the window. the windshield. the san mateo county crime lab was on scene as investigators collected evidence. police say they're pursuing several leads and believe this was an isolated

nbc bay area's marianne favro is in san jose. with these new numbers in san francisco. the median rent in february was $3,276 a month. now a new report by consumer affairs spells out how much renters need to earn to live comfortably in the city. by the bay. san francisco tops the list in the bay area at $131,000, that's the minimum income. in order to live a comfortable lifestyle. after looking at median rents, the report also found you need to earn more than $124,000 to live comfortably in san jose, 117,000 in fremont and about 99,000 in oakland. oakland is the only bay area city that does not require a six figure income in order to live comfortably. consumer affairs based, living comfortably on the federal government's affordability threshold that people not pay more than 30% of their income on rent. but in san jose, people we spoke with say the survey numbers seem a little low. i think at least 150,000 maybe to start living comfortably, i mean, just considering like how much we make and how much we have to spend just to be comfortable. i mean, just food and groceries

nbc's marianne favro has the new details. the crash happened shortly after seven this morning at the intersection of center road and capitol expressway. police say the investigation centers around the driver of this red truck. we know that the red truck that was going westbound on capitol ran a red light when it collided with the bicyclist. that bicyclist, unfortunately suffered major injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. officers arrested the truck's driver, who they say also slammed into this white truck. the name of the cyclist killed has not been released, but police say the victim was a man. the crash happened in front of andrew hill high school. esther barron lives nearby and says she worries about her grandkids safety. there's so many kids that cross the street and the cars don't want to stop. this is the 17th fatal accident in san jose this year. four have involved cyclists, and in 2022, there were 36 collisions in san jose that either killed or seriously injured cyclists. which is why community activist

let's bring in nbc's marianne favro. there were hundreds of students here at san francisco state university this afternoon as eight delegates representing the student protesters met with the president of the university, lynn mahoney. in fact, lynn mahoney sat right here. now, one of their demands is to have more transparency with the investments that the university is making. and asking the university not to invest in any companies that are perhaps providing any military aid to israel. now, hundreds of students watched as as this went on. as you can see over here, the tent camp is growing. there are now about 50 tents here. so basically the university president did agree to try to be more transparent about investments and look more closely at those investments. now, the student caucus is going to meet and look at that response, and then they're going to issue a response to the president as well. so no final decisions here. but this was the beginning of a dialog. and this is one of the first times that a university presid

nbc bay area of marianne favro joins us live with the update we just got from police. marianne yes, and we received that same update. police tell us that a boy, an adult, or rather a juvenile boy was one of the people stabbed. the other is an adult man. he was taken to the hospital where right now he is fighting for his life in critical condition. and this all happened near emma farm park, off king road. the stabbing happened shortly before 530 tonight near where cinco de mayo celebrations were taking place off king road. it's unclear if the violence is connected to those celebrations. to celebrate, yesenia angeles says she believes cinco de mayo celebrations may have increased the risk of violence as police searched for a suspect on foot. a police helicopter circled the area using a loudspeaker to warn drivers to leave the plaza at king and story, or risk having their vehicles towed near downtown. police closed the park avenue off ramp off southbound highway 85. police say they also focused on crowd control on santa clara street because of safety concerns, including fi

as nbc bay area's marianne favro explains, an unusual incident forced the power in their building to be shut off. reporter what started as a midmorning call of someone stuck in an elevator at oak grove senior terrace on carroll lane in oakley, quickly grew to much more. that's correct. they determined that the elevator was stuck between floors because of a water leak or an unknown substance in a bathtub on the second floor that overflowed from the bathtub into the wall, and the load bearing wall that has the electrical service for the entire apartment complex. firefighters say no one was inside the stuck elevator, but the hazmat team was called in to figure out what was inside this bathtub. in one of the units, firefighters say it might be sewage with the electrical system impacted, shut off power for safety reasons, forcing more than 60 seniors to evacuate. but it was not an easy process. some of them are in wheelchairs or use walkers, others have medical issues. if i didn't have an extra oxygen tank, i would be in bad shape because they don't have no generators here. the seniors we
